Post subject:  Any Recommendations on SJO Hotels Under $50/night?

Does anyone have suggestions on San Jose hotels that charge less than $50 per night and are chica-friendly? I'll be in town first week of Sept. then traveling to the west the coast for an adventure tour, so want to spread the expenses out.

Will also consider hotels that are affordable but not specifically chica-friendly and use short-time rooms or MPs instead of the hotel.

BTW, I'm guessing that Hotel Morazan (aka Hotel Costa Rica Morazán) is not the same as CASA Morazan (www.casamorazan.com) -- which has a $20 guest fee!

Any recent info on rates and policies at Hotel Morazan? Different web pages show rates there as both $53 AND $59 for singles, so don't know if this place might be a possibility.

Any suggestions welcome!

Meet a fellow staying at the Castillo my virgin trip. He was very pleased with his accommodations there for the money. He talked like he was in at less than $50 per night. You might call them and see what you can find out. I'm looking to stay there my next trip. Let me know how it goes.

You can't beat Castillo. I usually stay in one of their high end rooms for about $56 per night, but the standard rooms are OK to. Very comfortable homey place. Super friendly staff, and chatting with CRTers over breakfast is fun too.

Depending on how early in the first week of September you are referring to. Until Monday 3 Sept. you are going to have trouble finding a room at any monger hotel in the gulch at any price range.

You might want to look into Dunn Inn. They advertise a $39.00 single (plus tax of 16.39%).

another vote for the Castillo. I have stayed there for my previous three trips and will be staying there again in Oct/Nov. I've stayed in both the standard and the deluxe rooms, but not the rooms with kitchenettes.

The rates are great at the Castillo. Take the advertised rate and shave off 20% I believe if you pay by cash. You get an additional CRT discount. Plus if you stay there more than a week you get another discount.

The only real difference between the standard rooms and the deluxe rooms are the size of bed (full vs. queen) and the deluxe rooms have windows.

The place is VERY chica friendly. The staff is great and most speak English. They check all of the girls IDs as they come in. This saved me once when I brought back a chica with a fake ID. They called her on it. Turned out she didn't turn 18 for a month. I was very greatful that Patricia, the receptionist at the Castillo caught her before we could do anything. Saved me from possibly getting into trouble with the law.

On my last two trips there had been chicas in the Bar next door, which made things very convenient as well. To top it off, New Fantasy is only about a block away and Sportsman's is around the corner.

Godbless all the key staff at Castillo, Patricia, Marta, Danny and of course, Darren the Manager. On your first visit you are greeted warmly, on subsequent visits you are treated like a returning family member. It is only a one minute walk to NF, three to ZB and two minutes to SL. What more do you want?

If you like the Castillo , it may be wise to not write about it so much. Its my favorite place but with nearly tweleve thousand memebers here, it will soon become impossible to get reservations. I would send business their way gladly if they were not doing well because I like the staff . Just my opinion.
I know this web site is dedicated to the free spirited sharing of info but saturation points are reached with certain elements of San Jose. Sometimes reticence is the best bet.

Anouther hotel that comes to mind is Hotel Doral at a about $30 per night with breakfast tax included if you pay in cash. Usually no mention of tax at local hotels when paying cash. It is in local neighborhood several blocks from the gulch but very central in the downtown area. Maybe $5 for company. May not be best option for first timer but for seasoned traveler used to local nieghborhoods it is a good option for price. Some apartments listed here are a good option as well for a week or more. rbc100

Very True. However, based on my last time there and my buddy's recent trip, it seems that the eco-tourists are the one's filling this place up now. My fear is that if to many of these ecotourists keep showing up, the Castillo my attempt to be more "family friendly" like the Presidente is becoming. I would rather book my reservations a few weeks earlier because the place is full of mongers, than not be able to bring chicas there because the place is full of families.

Besides, one of the side benefits to a hotel with a bunch of mongers is that chicas tend to gravitate toward it like moths to flames.
