I'm searching for a flight to SJO and they have the best RT at $319. I would arrive SJO at 11:45pm and depart at 12:45am on the way out. I can live with that for the price I think.

I remember some negative write ups on Spirit but are they dependable enough to trust yet?

Thanks.

Spirit doesn't sound like much fun but if I can actually get the $319 RT flight this site says is available then I'm probably going to try.

I wouldnt worry too much, I have used spirit a lot, and just came back from CR in May on spirit, There are always those who will complain about anything. and those that praise anything that someone else does. ie Sportsmans Lodge, that I think is the biggest rippoff in SJO, spirit gets the job done, granted its cut rate, so dont expect to be treated like a first class passenger.

Why do you think the SL is a ripoff?

I do have to ask as well... This is the first time I've heard of SL being called a rip-off...

I've only stayed there once, and enjoyed my stay. It was expensive, but I stayed in the PH, so I expected the ~$250/night... (I don't remember the exact figure)

You can't please everyone all the time 8)

I will always stay there as my number 1 choice. I think in my opinion that it is still the best place around. Yes the prices are US level, but you can't beat the atmosphere and people you meet there.

Could not agree more. Also when I am there I am in a foreign yet freindly country. It is cool that the owner is always there and there are never any problems. The people there treat me like family but I am quite charming

You got that right. But it's kind of refreshing seeing someone who will NOT stay at the SL. That's just one less person competing for the same room! And with SL's consistent occupancy numbers, I don't think one less patron will make any difference. But it's too bad that someone, who has never even stayed there, chooses to call the SL a "rip-off"

Like you said, you can't please everyone all the time....

I think you could call Holiday Inn, Sleep Inn amd even Del Rey a ripoff with the chica fees but SL is a reasonably good value for what you get. If you want good food walk 1 1/2 blocks to Cafe Mundo. Buy a bottle at duty free upon entering country for your drinks

I had a pretty crappy experience at SL room wise, but I think the place has a nice atmosphere, and its nice to be able to come out and just relax, plus talk to some guys.

Price wise, its definitly on the expensive side, but who cares about an extra 20-30$ a night?

I dont understand some of these guys that budget things down to the nickel.

I have to agree with Gringobill to some extent. The food at Sportsmens is not always consistent and of the 40 plus meals I have eaten there, four or 5 have been less than good. This is probably consistent with most San Jose restaurants, however. The trick is to find the items you like and stick with them, as they prepare some things very well. Additionally, a couple of times the breakfast waitress has been surly and inattentive. Generally though, the service, I believe, is outstanding. However, I do not think it is overly expensive. I, like MuchoGusto, do not understand how a couple of poor meals qualifies the SL as a "rip off." As far as the hotel goes and the overall package, I echo the general sentiment. My first choice in the gulch.

Ciaociao

Back to the original question - Spirit Air

Tica -

Took two trips FLL - SJO no problem.

The good:

Best pricing - coach and "big front seat" from South FLA

You Aviod MIA

25k Free Spirit Award Travel.

New Airbus planes - comfortable.

The bad:

Check in is a fiasco - prepare to spend a little more time.

Staff at airport unhelpful, unknowledgeable, not customer service oriented.

Bottom line: you take the good with the bad, but on balance a great deal for a guy in South FLA

On the SL:

It's the CRT Clubhouse - enjoy it for what it is.

Ok, lets straighten it out, I never called the SL a ripoff, I said the food was not up to CR standards and that it was pricey, I also said that the service was sub par, The SL seems like a nice gathering place for CRT members. But I for one do not go to CR to meet other gringos and sit around and chat, nor do I go to CR to eat americanized food prepared by a cook who speaks spanish, I can get that at home.

My favorite places to eat in the gulch are:

Chelles, Soda Peru, The Gardens for the lunch special, I always have a meal or two at the News Cafe, the food there is rather expensive but the ambiance of the rail makes up for it.
