One of my wingmen is headed back to CR before our Labor Day excursion. He learned about this Royal Dutch Hotel from a fellow enthusiast last trip. Said he heard excellent things. I did a search here on CRT and came up emtpy. Anyone know if this place is decent? Website was not very informative, and the location is a good bit away from the HDR area. Any knowledge would be most appreciated, :D

MIA,

I never stayed there, so I have very little knowledge of Hotel Royal Dutch. I did a search and came up with a few threads containing some feedback on RD:

https://costaricaticas.com/phpBB2/vi ... oyal+dutch

https://costaricaticas.com/phpBB2/vi ... oyal+dutch

https://costaricaticas.com/phpBB2/vi ... oyal+dutch

https://costaricaticas.com/phpBB2/vi ... oyal+dutch

From what I gleaned in the threads, RD is relatively inexpensive, has no chica fee, has a casino and disco, and a master suite for under $100 (all pluses in my book). It's not really all that far from the gulch, either...about 7 or 8 blocks to HDR. Last week, a banner hanging from the wall facing Calle 4 advertised a special in the bar: 2 beers for 1200 C...not a bad deal in San Jose!

Never stayed at the hotel. The disco has a fun and hot Nica crowd on Fridays. Good location.

I am never going home

3+ years ago the Royal Dutch was used by a number of guys here on CRT. It used to be a "sister" property of the Morazan...and was rehabbed about the same time and in the same style as Hotel Morazan by the then owner or Casinos Europa who controlled both those hotels. The Morazan is a more convenient location in the gulch, but the Royal Dutch is right on the main avenue as you come into town from the airport...not from the main cathedral and main square in front of it. During the years I lived in CR, it was mostly a Tico hangout in the casino and nearby bars. I have seen a couple of the rooms...and while small...they are similar to the Morazan and probably not a bad value. I know there have been booking and management issues there similar to some of Morazans history. You might want to give it a try for value though...

I reported on the Royal Dutch before renovation in 2003.
It was a disappointment at that time, in many ways.

They tried to charge my charge card for a lot of dollars to block the sum, so I said I would pay cash in advance each day. Elevator was sometimes out of order. My buddy had to change rooms three times to get a working AC.
Hot water was off and on. Noisy. No breakfast or even coffee. I ended up walking six blocks to the News Cafe and paying $6 for breakfast each day.

I think the location is NOT good, right on Central Ave. Two women tried to pick my pocket right in front, although that could happen anywhere.

No guards at doors, no full time maid service, no room service....
