has anyone followed the articles in AM CR on the proposed bill to mandate a 20% discount to ticos and mandate setting aside 20% of rooms for this rate i won't go into the CR rational for this but would it hurt or benefit us? it would appear to benefit ticos, but i don't see a rush of ticos booking room at the HDR but could enterprising operators offer to book rooms under their names for a cut of the 20% discount? not that i am a cynic |

My bet is that John, the owner of the DR,will find a way around this if the law is actually enacted. Let's see....the DR has around 100 rooms that are usually fully booked. If the average room goes for around $100/night that means he would potentially LOSE $400/night (20 x $20) or possibly $2800/week. With an 85% occupancy rate on a yearly basis he would lose $123,760. Yeah sure he will. hahaha |

I would say that I would not be surprised if it passed as it is typical populist Tico political maneuvering; pass a bill directed at the Tico voter that someone else has to pay for. Other examples are their ridiculous squatter legislation and their expropriation policy, both of which result in taking something of value from the true owner and transferring it to someone else for nothing. ![]() |

I do not think this bill will affect us, I do not think a Tico family first chouse in hotels will be the same as ours. There is a growing resentment that they cannot afford to go to some places in there country because the tree huger are driving up the prices. I also do not think 20% will change that. |
