As has been mentioned before airlines often have a habbit of overbooking flights. I recently had a bad experience on a flight purchased late on sale from Delta for a trip to Lima, Peru from Dallas through Atlanta. The system wouldn't let me assign a seat on line for Atl-Lima. Mistake was I didn't take time to call and try to get a seat. I arrive in Dallas and check in for flight and system still won't assign seat but am assured I have a confirmed seat and get to Atlanta fine on a tight connection to find out flight to Lima is 35 seats overbooked, I eventually get to Lima 8 hours later after being rerouted all over Latim America on both Delta and Lan Airlines( LAN is anouther nice Latin America Airline by the way) with no luggage in the chill of winter in Lima in my shorts and Tshirt at 6 AM. Not much fun but at least Delta compensated inconvienenced travelers with a travel voucher. Now rest of story, was checking my flight to San Jose on Delta in about 2 weeks and same thing, the system wouldn't let me assign a seat for Atl-SJ leg so I call Delta up and express concern about recent unfortunate experience and the agent tells me no problem that she will assign a prefered seat so I know I have a seat.
