Post subject:  Donation or fee?

I noticed a gulch hotel charging a $1/day donation added to the room fee for what certainly sounds like a very worthy cause. I was informed you can simply request the "donation" be removed from the bill but I'd say that most guests probably never even notice it. I couldn't imagine a business in the states doing that, it's not really a donation if you are being charged is it? My favorite lunch place in the US is a sports bar does a lot of charity stuff and the owner always matches donations from customers, I could imagine how it would go over if instead he tried to slip in a $1 charge on every lunch or bar tab for charity. Most people would simply rather give of their own free will. Anyway, I'm not bitching about a few bucks but just thought it was odd for a business to do such a thing since I've never seen it done that way, seems to me that offering to match donations would appear a more legit way to raise money and show that they are really concerned about the cause rather than slipping it in on the guest fees.

Paco, I wholeheartedly agree. Is this "muy tico"?

Because I am a guest in their country, I find myself frequently biting my tongue over a practice or custom that I am not familiar with.

I think they learned it from their president. He regularly picks and terminates his countrys' diplomatic relationships based on who will bankroll their liberalism.
