I was just looking at airfares and airlines are offering lower fares for those who are willing to endure a 17 hour trip from NY. ![]() What is the longest one-way trip you have made to/from SJO? (Sorry, I'm bored at work.) |

About 24 hours if you count the night I spent sleeping on the floor under an escalator at the Charlotte, North Carolina airport. ![]() Zebra |

I'll never forget my first and longest trip to SJO...August 30, 2004. It took me 20 hours to get to SJO from PHL (Philly). I booked on United...PHL to SJO via IAD (Dulles). The leg from PHL to IAD was held up on the tarmac because of weather. After sitting almost 5 hours in a cramped regional jet, we departed PHL and arrived in Dulles 40 minutes later. Of course, all the flights to SJO were done for the day. United booked me on a 6:11 am AA flight to SJO via MIA (Miami)...so I made the best of a terrible night in the terminal. ![]() ![]() Up until last year, USAIRWAYS had a daily straight shot to SJO from PHL...a quick 4 1/2 hour ride. That flight ended early last year...except for the seasonal non-stops that depart on Saturdays. USAIRWAYS now routes through CLT (Charlotte) which takes a total of 7 - 8 hours. I believe I will use one of Continental's two daily non-stops out of EWR (Newark) for my next trip. Flight time is only about 5 hours. |

BD, They still do, in a way. It's actually a Taca flight but a United flight number, they are air partners. The flight (with United #) is about $200 more than the exact same flight (with Taca flight number). |

I'll never forget my flight back on my 2nd trip... Was SUPPOSED to leave at 12pm from SJO. Got to the airport at 10:30, flight was delayed 4 hours... We sat on the tarmac for 2 more hours, and then they mention that I won't make my blithering connection in Charlotte, so I gotta stay there, so we all pile out of the plane to rebook... When all was said and done, we left SJO 8 hours later than were supposed to!!! I could have had 3 more doubles at ZB in that time!!!!! Then I got to spend a QUALITY night at the Charlotte airport, only to leave 4 hours later on the 5am flight to Boston, so I could drive 2 hours into work!!!! and THAT was my last USair flight to SJO... Now I take either TACA or Continental direct... I'll sometimes consider AA through Miami, but only b/c I have a chica there that I can abuse if I get stuck there... |

Yep, JFK-SJO, non-stop, 5 hours. It's an early flight 6:30am-9:30am. Lacsa 661 On Taca.com, the flight is $501 On United, it's $734 |

I LOVE the arrival time of that TACA flight, but I can't deal with the 2am departure from home in order to make it... I'd rather give up a few hours, and get there at 11am on the continental flight... ON THE OTHER HAND... I hate the 12:15 departure on Continental on the way back, and LOVE the 6pm departure with TACA... Continental has more perks, and I get mileage, TACA has better airplanes... Decisions, decisions... |

here's why I almost always take Taca non-stops: -competitive pricing -new A320's are pretty comfortable -online check-in -no traffic to airport -no lines at check-in at 4:30am (with online check-in I can arrive 90 minutes before my flight) -flights on time -no lines at SJO immigration at 9:45am -traffic not too bad from airport to gulch -flight back is 6:40pm, so you have up to 4pm before you leave -no line at check-in (online check-in) -no traffic from airport home The only downsides to taking the JFK-SJO nonstops are: getting in that early the hotel rooms are usually not ready until about 12noon, so you usually have to wait an hour or two, but not always. You can drop your shit off and go to an MP, no problem. The other downside is that the return flight doesn't get into NY until 1am, so the next day at work is not too pleasant. |

I use the NJ Coast Line from Asbury Park to and from EWR. If I stay put for another 20 minutes, I would be in NYC (Penn Central Station). If I could figure out a simple, cost effective way to get from either EWR or Penn Station to JFK, I would give TACA a shot. (Limo from the Jersey Shore to JFK is $95 one-way.) |

I booked a little late using my FFM's from a small airport 30 minutes from home to SJ. The trip there about 7 hours. The return trip was a pain. From SJ to Kennedy, taxi to La guardia (where I spent the night) , then to St' Louis, then the puddle jumper to my local airport. About 26 hours in total. Lesson learned, book with FFM's early. Regards to all, Kenj8 |

There are a lot of ways to get out to JFK rather cheaply, but not exactly simple. You could always take the subway to the Air train, I don't know the cost for the Air train but it's only $2 for the subway from Penn. You may be able to get off at EWR and take the PATH and get off at 14th and cut a bit more time off of the train ride, I'd have to check the subway lines. The only problem is it's not a short subway ride, and I'm very familiar with the arduous beginning of your train ride until you get at least to Long Branch (I commuted from Metropark to NYC for years and now visit friends in Point Pleasant from NYC during the summer).... with that trip I don't know if I would want to add that subway ride, but the truth is it could be a really cheap way to get out there. Another intereting path might be the ferry rides that go from various parts of coast, I took one home during the blackout from the east side of Wall. St and it wasn't bad, you would just need a ride to the ferry and a boat at the right time. There are also those blue airport carpool shuttles which you call ahead for, it might be hard to pin down an exact time but JFK isn't more than 20-30 bucks. Your best bet will be one of the city busses, I see them leave from Grand Central all the time, and those probably aren't that expensive either. You can take the 1 or 9 train (i think) from Penn Station uptown one stop to Times Square and then take the S train (shuttle) over to Grand Central for a total of $2. then you just have to walk a block down park ave and there are busses that leave from there to JFK, I would do some online research on that. There are definitely creative ways to highly reduce the cost, one might just work out for you. I just expense the car ![]() |
