Another article of confirmation in Inside Costa Rica:

Spirit Airlines Gets Permission For Service To Costa Rica
For those who bought tickets on Spirit Airlines, there is good news, the Consejo Técnico de Aviación Civil (CTAC) approved the airlines' application for service to San José. The first flights will begin next month. The vice-minister of Transportes, Viviana Martín, confirmed yesterday that the airline complied with all the legal, technical and financial requirements and the CTAC's approval Monday night.

"For those who purchased tickets they can be completely calm that Spirit Airlines, will fly without problems", said Martín. The permit if only for three months allowing for time for a public hearing where the other airlines serving Costa Rica will have an opportunity to voice their opposition, if any. Only, following the public hearing, Spirit may be granted a permanent license.

Carlos Ricardo Benavides, Ministro de Turismo (tourism minister), said that the Spirit operation is an excellent confirmation that Costa Rica is a desirable area for foreign investment and one that is growing. In addition to Spirit, next month, First Choice Airlines will be making its first flight from London to Liberia, which combined mean more than 50.000 more visitors per year.

Benavides added that an agreement was reached with Grupo Marza, owners of the Air Comet airlines in Spain, which will take over the route operated by Air Madrid. Air Madrid has its license revoked by Spanish officials, leaving thousands of travellers worldwide stranded. "Air Comet will begin operations in the third week in June will operate three flights weekly, in addition in June Iberia will offer seven direct flights between Madrid and San José", commented the minister.

Spirit will begin its first flight on April 5, providing service between Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and San José. A number of selected seats on the first flights were sold at us$0.08 cents, plus taxes, each way. The same April 5 flight is being offered on their website at us$233 each way, plus taxes. Spirit offers connections for those travelling from Orlando, Tampa, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Chicago, Atlanta and Detroit.

Just purchased a ticket from them to fly from SJO to Vegas on the 5th of June. Total r.t. including taxes and fees cost me 341.00. Haven't had that good a deal for a couple of years. I'm a convert!

For all your Spirit Airlines ticket holders... Here ya go!
Inside Costa Rica - 4 April, 2007

Spirit Begins Operations in Costa Rica Tomorrow
Spirit Airlines begins operations in Costa Rica tomorrow, with the first passengers arriving from Florida. The airline will have three flights a week between Fort Lauderdale and San José and beginning in May will begin daily service.

The airline is expected to bring more than 50.000 passengers a year to Costa Rica, though its permit to operate is only on a temporary basis for the next three months. The airline has reportedly already begun the process of obtaining a permanent operations license.

I've got a feeling that this kind of thing will be normal for a while, until they get the "bugs" worked out of their system. They'll probably experience some growing pains. And I'm sure that, in the future (until they get things real organized) we're going to hear about numerous problems with delays, changing flight schedules, baggage problems, etc. Should be interesting to see how things play out over the next 3 - 6 months with Spirit Airlines flying to SJO. I hope they make a run of it, so the "majors" can see that they've got competition. Good luck to all ticket holders.
MG

Spirit has a new policy that will charge $5 a bag for each checked bag. the new policy will take effect around June 5. Maybe this revenue stream can take up the slack for cheap fares
