I am wondering whether the ticket I purchased for April is useless, given that Spirit ALLEGEDLY does not have landing permits, or did not have landing permits at some point. Yes, I know about the article that was posted weeks back.

I called Spirit and they "assured" me that all is order. I can smell the class action suit now. . . lol

Poll: Should I purchase another ticket via Taca, etc. to be safe, or prepare the parachute just in case

(Orange is a smartass :-)

Yeah, Orange....you smart-ass !!!!

Mam01mam,
Did you ask the Spirit Airlines representative EXACTLY where you could see that "assurance" in writing? Short of that, I'd start packing your 'chute!
Buena Suerte,

Update:

Just got off the phone with Spirit and one of their supervisors. The claim that there should be no problem with obtaining the government clearance, as this is something that had to be dealt with when they first started flying to Mexico, Santo Domingo, St. Thomas, etc. Allegedly, "everything should be okay and they will have the clearance to fly in to SJO" in time.

Allegedly, the clearance application process is well underway.

I am having a Syracuse "Orange" parachute made just in case.

I wouldnt worry about it, They have sold a lot of tickets and I doubt they would do that without knowing they will get approval.

And people in hell want ice water too.

Get the $13 dollar insurance and you're covered regardless of the situation.

Youll be covered regardless. The airline isnt going bankrupt, they still have a crap load of other destinations they fly to. If they dont get the landing permits, someone will start a suit and eventually theyll half the reinburse all the tickets.

Well, the application has been submitted, but no approval yet. This article is in today's Inside Costa Rica:

Spirit Airlines Makes Application To Being Service in Costa Rica
Good news for all those who purchased the low priced tickets offered by Spirit Airlines that promised to commence regular service between San José and Florida. The airline yesterday presented a formal application to the Aviación Civil to begin the service.

Earlier this month Spirit began selling low cost tickets for the new service, the first tickets offered at us$0.08 cents, then offering tickets at us$97, plus taxes, on a one way ticket. Spirit, if the application is approved, would commence service in April, according to Transport Minister, Viviana Martín, adding that the airline has to meet all the requirements for it to be approved.

The airline has to demonstrate that it is economically viable to operate in the country and then has to meet the requirements set out by the Consejo Técnico de Aviación Civil (CTAC), which can take up to 15 days from the application to make a decision on whether the airline can operate in Costa Rica.

Martín added that beginning today the application will be closely scrutinized, ensuring that all the requirements are met, before giving the airline the rights to operate. Costa Rica will be the first country in Central America for Spirit, offering low cost flights between San José and Fort Lauderdale, with three flights a week and expanding to five in May.

I'd be very surprised if their application was denied, especially since the commercial carriers generate a lot of revenue for the airport, as well as the entire country. I'm sure we'll see something positive within the next 2 or 3 weeks.
MG

None of that should be a problem. There has not been a rumor of financial problems at Spirit and they have been in business for a good period of time expanding sensibly. CTAC requirements can not be any more stringent then the FAA regulations Spirit and all US flagged carriers operate under.

If I had a reservation and one of those .08 cent tickets I would be packing my bags already

good news MG, I am sure it will be approved, and who knows if Jet Blue ever gets back on its feet, there could be a price war.

Approval should come. Remember, tourist numbers in CR are down.

What does 'Land' actually mean? Couldn't they just hit the runway and have everyone jump out? Then they can take back off?
