Where I can see toucans in wildlife somewhere near from Jaco or Quepos? Is there any national park or other place to see them close?

About four miles / 6 km. south of Quepos is Costa Rica's oldest national park, called Manuel Antonio. Continuing south, you'll encounter two other large national parks, including Marino Ballena, the world's only underwater national park.

Toucans? We encountered a pair a green toucans on the rain gutter of our hotel in downtown San Jose, as well as thousands of "pericos" (parakeets). I've only been to San Jose and the Central and South Pacific coast of Costa Rica. We encountered numerous squirrel monkeys (mono titi) and white-faced cinnamon ringtails (Cappucoinos, caras blancas) monkeys. I still haven't encountered a howler monkey.

Caymans, those ugly little cousins of the crocodile are alll over south Puntarenas province. Lots of culebras (snakes) as well, including the deadly bushmaster and the fer-de-lance, called "terciopelo" by the local folks.

Hope this helps.

Post subject:  Toucans

We saw Toucans, as well as Scarlet Macaws, Howler or White Faced Monkeys (I forget which), dozens of Iguanas, and several other species of bird, mammal, amphibian and insect primarily of interest to folks such as I (often referred to as Nerdy Bird Watchers by the uninitiated) at Carara National Park, just beyond what is often called Crocodile Bridge, the bridge over Río Tárcoles about 10 – 15 miles outside of Jáco. We also saw Toucans in Monteverde during the Skywalk, a series of suspension foot bridges just above the forest canopy.

This is probably more information than you are looking for, but I believe there are 3 different species of Toucan in CR; Chestnut Billed Toucan, Something-or-Other Toucanete (I forget what exactly) and Keel Billed Toucan, the one on the Fruit Loops package and hence the one most folks think of when they think of Toucans. The Keel Billed Toucans are the ones I am referring to here.

Of course there are at least two major hurdles to cross if you are looking for Toucans, or many other bird species for that matter:

1)They spend practically all their time in the canopy of the forest rather than eye level.

2)Just because somebody saw 8 of them “In that tree right over there!” yesterday is no guarantee they aren’t 15 miles away by today. Birds do have wings and will occasionally use them.

I have seen colorful toucans on the Carrobean side and another variety near Arenal. Beautiful birds.

AndySpb,

A good appropriate question for a visitor to CR. I have seen only dos toucans (or twocans, if you will), during my 3 visits. They were both pets at a very small rest stop on the way to Tortuguero. Even though they were pets, it was quite a sight. One of the toucans was a juvenile and he was playing with me, gently nibbling on my finger. Also present, were a family of howler monkeys.
The other wildlife species that fascinates me in CR is the 3 toed sloth or oso perezoso. While many of this animal live in CR, I saw quite a few of them, with Babi*s, in Manuel Antonio.
