Hey Tom,
Welcome to CRT! After reading my reply here, you might want to do a search on CRT for specific hotels and reviews, but here's a start:
You've mentioned the Sportsmen's Lodge, one of my first choices for lodging in SJ. It's a small boutique hotel catering to gentlmen like us. 20 rooms or so, nice bar, WIFI, free pool table, satellit TV (including a porno channel), good kitchen, secure, digital safes in the rooms, A/C, excellent service and pretty young ladies who frequent the bar.
Hotel Presidente: American-style luxury. WIFI, some suites with private jacuzzis, jacuzzi on rooftop, good restaurant (expensive), digital safes in the rooms. No chica visitor fee (unlike the Hotel delRey), but you're limited to one chica at a time (no 3-ways), and they do have a dress code for visiting chicas. CRT discount sponsor, so if you're a V.I.P. member, you can save a few bucks/night. They also have a cool little sports bar/restaurant and a casino.
Hotel del Rey: The Pink Palace is eight stories of Sodom & Gomorrah, and is callled The Belly of the Beast with good reason. Beat-up rooms, noisy...and many CRT members absolutely love it. The casino and Blue Marlin Bar are open 24/7; working girls populate the bar and casino. $10.00 per chica/per visit fee, unfortunately.
Casino Hotel Costa Rica Morazan: A bit beaten up as well, but a low-priced alternative to the HDR or Presidente. Tico Times coupon gets you a $40.00/night room rate. It's right across c. 9 from the HDR and around the corner from the Key Largo nightclub.
Best Western San Jose: Nice hotel, shitty location. Good room rates (around $50.00/night including free breakfast). About a $3.00 taxi ride from the Hotel del Rey.
Clarion Amon Plaza: Contact Nixon Netto, casino manager for a discounted "players' rate." CRT sponsor. Nice enough hotel with an excellent breakfast,, literally a half block from Zona Blue. American style amenities, business center. There have recently been some complaints posted here about the hotel, but most members have found it to be okay.
Hotel Europa downtown (not to be confused with the Radisson Europa near the airport). Old hotel in the grand European style. Haggle about rates upon check in; you should be able to negotiate a room for $50.00, a twenty dollar savings from their regular rate.
Holiday Inn Aurola: Next to Morazan Park, a CRT sponsor offering $75.00 off-season room rates. Hey, it's a Holiday Inn. Casino on top floor. Very close to all the action.
Hope this helps. Others will chime in, I'm sure. And again, welcome to CRT!
