Article from Inside Costa Rica newspaper today

Spirit Airlines says it has sold 3.000 low priced tickets on its Costa Rica - Florida service that is to being in April. However, the company does not yet have landing permits in the country.

Costa Rican aviation officials (CETAC) say they have yet to receive an application by the airline. CETAC takes at least 15 days to approve a provisional landing permit, opening the door for other airlines to present any opposition to the request.

And opposition is practically guaranteed. The Asociación de Lineas Aéreas (airlines association) has already publicly criticized publicly the arrival of the provided of low cost fares.

Authorities at Aviación Civil are recommending that people don't buy tickets until the airline has obtained permits. In the event the airline does not obtain the required lanidng permits and it does not refund the tickets, consumers will have to hope of the assistance of the Ministerio de Economía and the Defensoría del Consumidor to pressure the airline.

Of course, once Spirit is allowed in the big boys (AA, Delta, USAir) will take a hit, and will be forced to drop prices or fly half-filled planes.

That was the "conventional wisdom" when US Air started flying out of Ft Lauderdale offering flights non stop to San Jose for $225.00 to $250.00 all in.

AA and TACA kept their same high fares MIA/SJO. US Air dropped out of the market, routing everything through Charlotte, and AA & TACA kept flying.

I called Spirit today..The rep. said they HAVE US Permits already approved and HAVE applied to Costa Rica Auth. for the landing permit already..she said the one piece of paper they are needing back is NOT going to be a problem and they should have it in a few more days.

She said EVERYTHING had pre-approval way Before they started selling tickets.

spirit is still advertising and selling tickets to San Jose, CR.

I would bet they start flights and are awarded landing rights.

Why would Costa Rica discourage more tourism?

They fly all over the caribbean, I wish they would offer flights to other central and south american locations.
