I just arrived in San Jose at 2:00 pm...
the first of several surprises during my first two hours here...
the Airport Taxi is now $18 one way from the airport to San Jose (effective last week)

I just arrived in San Jose at 2:00 pm... the first of several surprises during my first two hours here... the Airport Taxi is now $18 one way from the airport to San Jose (effective last week)

I also paid $18 to go to the hotel Castillo on Dec 24th. Oh well, not going to change my future trip plans.

The bus is less than 60 cents. 300 colones, the last time I checked. The bus stop is a short walk from the terminal. It drops you off near the CocaCola Terminal, not a nice part of town but you can find a regular cab there for normal fares. Just a thought. |

$15, 18, 20 who cares....get me there quick!!!!! I always have a driver waiting on me when I arrive and always give them $20. No matter if my flight is delayed the guy will be there waiting for me..... |

And my driver is there even if my flight is early. Late. Doesn't matter. His orange car or the orange car of one of his colleagues is right outside baggage/Customs when I need a ride. Interesting topic idea: Private drivers versus taxis. I would like to see evidence that the former is somehow more convenient than the latter, for the extra price. And please quote the price you pay and the propina (aside from a buck per bag if the taxista handles your luggage, tips are neither required nor expected by the taxistas). This subject came up when I visited last August. The SL was ready to send a driver to fetch me at $20.00 plus propina. This was when the taxi ticket cost $12.00 at the window outside Customs. I chose the airport taxi instead and still arrived at the SL fifteen minutes after buying the ticket. Maybe more frequent travelers than I could educate me on the advantages (other than the chance to sort of be aa V.I.P./big shot) of using a hired driver instead of the taxis? No sarcasm here; I just want to know what I might be missing by not using a private driver. Thanks! |

some of the busses take you all the way into town and you can get off near the National Theatre, one block from the Presidente. carry on luggage is the way to go. during the daytime, it is a perfectly safe ride. just use common sense and keep your bag on your lap. |

Also, what are the bus numbers and schedule? I know that the A bus doesn't go to San Jose (it goes to Alajuela) and the B goes into town... I think.  Help out a geographically-challenged bro', bro'!

I can't remember the bus number, but the one time I took it from the airport, I exited from the terminal, walked around the parking garage and stood on the main street in front of the airport by the sole bus stop. when a bus pulled up, I asked the driver (in my limited spanish) if the bus went into 'downtown'. I think I mentioned 'Theater National" and I believe the fare was less than 200 colones. anyway, I took the bus just as an experiment after reading about RCB and some of the other members posts about saving money. actually, $18 may be a large increase percentage wise from the old fare, but I wouldn't let it disuade me from visiting again. every other trip I've taken, I've always rode in a taxi. maybe next time, if I meet you at the airport, you and me can try hitch-hiking into town like Circus does.

Only bus I know that goes between the airport and San Jose is the Alejuela/San Jose bus company Station Wagon (so named because they originally used station wagons). They drop you off on Avenida Segunda almost directly across from Parque Merced which about 8 blocks west of the National Theater. As far as using a private driver most who live here have a driver to call when arriving or departing the country. I use a guy who very dependable, always 15 minutes early to pick you up at your casa and always there when you arrive. He charges me $15.00. Well worth it since I normally leave my casa at 5:00 AM and do not want to worry about calling a cab. |

The express bus run's every 5 min,120 colones takes 45 min to terminal station#14......17 KM trip,and bus's there and back are from..04.50-22.55 all the info at..http://costaricatour.virtualavenet/buses/schedules 2.GIF.... |

Can not get that link to work but will say it has to be woefully out of date. The Sabana Estadio bus is 120 colones no way the Alejuela bus is 120 colones. |
