Post subject:  What we hated about the Hotel Del Rey.

Me and two buddies just got back from 4 days in SJ. This was my fourth trip in three years. I don’t mean to sound inflammatory or hopelessly negative but I wanted to convey realistic observations & complaints.

So-pardon me- but I’m need to sacrifice the pleasantries and candy coating here for the sake of accuracy:

1) What we hated about the Del Rey was how the “chicas” either sat on their rear-ends all night or stood in dark corners. It’s too hard to see what they really look like. Moreover, ambient lighting is so poor in some areas of the Del Rey, esp the bar area, that you can’t see anything (even during the daytime). Many just huddled in these 4 or 5 chica groups with the famed “get back stare”. Kind of like they’re either plain lazy or spoiled.
Why don’t they stand up and circulate so prospective clients can get at least a profile shot?

Furthermore, we were turned off by most of the “tatted out” Panamanians, Dominicanas, and Columbianas who hung in groups and kept nervously eyeing Hispanic men who popped in and out from the street. These chicas all projected an attitude that the gringos in the house were pathetic “johns” and chumps. Not even the most suave of seduction techniques could crack these hardened cynical women.

2) What we hated about the Del Ray was that there’s too many freaking tattoes and crazy body (tongue) piercings on some of these women. Bodily mutilation is passé as a form of sexual attraction these days. Maybe Costa Rica is behind in this fashion faux pas. If a woman will sit in and allow an amateur to stick a needle through her tongue or other private parts then she’ll allow anything - including infectious disease.

3) What we didn’t like about the Del Rey was that (for the inflated price and FEES) the rooms were rat-holes with lousy blown out beds. It’s the last time I ever stay there. When you compare DR to the excellent set up and atmosphere at the SPORTSMENS LODGE there’s a stark difference.

4) What we hated about the Hotel Del-Rey was that the staff has become arrogant, unreceptive to constructive complaints/suggestions, and condescending. Their fees are insulting & ridiculous. In business there’s the reasonable and practical expectation of profit and then there’s just outright price gouging and fleecing (i.e. the DEL REY)

5) ZONA BLUE “hotel”: What we didn’t like about the much heralded “Zona Blue” was how the female staff presented themselves. We went in to the bar and ordered some drinks-then the women (at best 5’s and 6’s) all filed in with bored looks only to plop down on these sunken sofas where they sit and stare at you. If you don’t make a choice in about 3 minutes they gradually (uno por uno) slide back out. If you take the bait- you purchase “sight unseen” and it becomes buyer’s remorse. Moreover, the owner/manager was pushy. In our hasty estimate, ZONA BLUE was only for the truly desperate.
This was the same situation, only worse, at Oasis and “Bar Idem”…a real waste of time, money, and opportunity cost (for us that is).

Guess I’m used to Buenos Aires (BA) where the women are walked by you one at a time or in a group…if you no like- you walk-no worries. Same-same in RIO at the Termas. In BA or Rio there’s never any problem with getting a full view in good lighting. Moreover the women aren’t “biatches” about everything.

Next trip, me and the crew are going to drop the extra cash and go to Buenos Aires (1st choice) and Rio (2nd Choice).

Perhaps someone in the know could relay these observations to the staff at Del Rey and Zona.

At any rate, thanks for reading.

Wow! Thanks for that honest assessment of CR. It's too bad you were unable to find a good experience in the BM or ZB.

Good luck in Rio or BA.

Gosh, I'm so embarrassed. I knew that I was desperate, but not truly desperate.

I'm sorry that Elle McPherson wasn't there to throw you a good hump.

I'd also like to wish you guys tha best of luck in BA or Rio.

Well, I'm no big fan of the Del Rey either, but I think after being in Buenos Aires and Rio, this may be a case of unrealistic expectations. I've never been to either myself, but from everything I've heard, the girls, attitudes, and just about everything else is simply better. Pamela notwithstanding, it's just not in the nature of most Ticas to be aggressive about courting your business.

Nevertheless, a good time can be had in CR if one knows the territory a bit and takes things for what they are. And it's a far cheaper and more convenient travel option from the States. However, I DO have to try out Rio soon...

Jenjad,
You said this was your 4th trip in 3 years. Were all four to San Jose?
If not, that would explain why you seem to be so surprised at what you found. If they were all in San Jose then I don't see how you could be so disappointed.

The Del Rey is what it is. There has been so much posted on CRT over the last 3 years I can't imagine anyone who stops by here to NOT know what the scene is like there. I've never felt the urge to stay there so I can't speak about the rooms. As for the girls maybe you should step back and look at the situation with a more open mind.

The girls do not work FOR the Del Rey. They are independent contractors. If they want to sit in the dark or huddle together in the middle of the bar that is pretty much their prerogative. If you're interested in meeting one of them I suggest you go up and speak to them.

Of course you can always get a table and watch the show as it goes by you until you find your dream girl. With over 100 girls in the Del Rey most nights there aren't more than 15-20 sitting in the dark.

As for comparing downtown San Jose P4P with BA or RIO, you might not have noticed but they aren't just different cities in different countries but THEY ARE IN A DIFFERENT CONTINENT!

Just because the girls speak a form of the same language (except in Rio where they speak portuguese) that doesn't mean they are all alike.
I've been to Rio and absolutely loved it. I hope to return in 2007.

That said, where else in the western hemisphere will you find such a variety of girls from different countries in one location? Keep in mind, termas are pretty unique to Brazil. The girls work FOR the terma and adhere to their rules. Of course it's pretty hard to get out of a terma for under a $100. Or is that just me?

"Why can't they have beer bars like in Thailand?" See how silly that sounds?

As for Zona Blue, the girls are pretty friendly and fun but they aren't robots or trained monkeys. There is an ever-changing lineup there so there should always be someone to spend an hour with (at a VERY reasonable price, I might add). Maybe you need to develop some social skills to get them to repond to you.

I would suggest you stick to BA and Rio. They are great cities and San Jose can't really compare with them but there are many positives to visiting Costa Rica, you just have to work within those parameters.

Happy travels to South America.

Post subject:  CR SUCKS!

Great post, CR needs more reviews like this.
Yes potential CR travelers, it's true, do not go to the shithole of SJO. The HDR sucks, the lazy spoiled chicas all have tattoos, ZB sucks, so do Oasis and Idem- in fact the whole friggen country blows and is…a real waste of time, money, and opportunity. And he didn't even mention the ripoff taxis, transexuals in the park, pollution, rain, crime and lousy food.

Damn I wish airfare would come down. :)

Talk about YMMV. Wow, I am sorry you were so disappointed. The Del Ray can be annoying at times. I for one am happy to be here.

Yes .... if I had the money to go to Costa Rica I would spend it going to the Dominican Republic or somewhere else! Costa Rica sucks bigtime and all you mongers should go to Rio.... or better yet Argentina (it's further away)

I am all for an honest constructive review of any establishment in CR as long as it is factual and not conjecture. I think some of the points you raised might have some validity. However, when you write:

Quote:

which is obviously opinion and not known fact then I have to question the other parts of your post.

Wish you happy mongering in South America and hope it will meet all your expectations.

jenjad,

I would think as handsome and good looking as you must be the girls would have come out of their dark corners and offered it up for next to nothing. But since they failed, I can understand your disappointment. Neither BA, Rio nor any other mongering city is without its hassles and disappointments. Rio happens to have some marginal girls running around and I would wager any amount of money BA does also. I've been to Rio 6 times this year and will return once more but I still love San Jose. I always have an excellent time and overall great experiences with the girls- It's probably just dumb luck.
