Oil prices are falling... Anyone have any idea on when airline tickets will follow? |

I hope soon! I check everyday. I should have ordered my January airfare as soon as I got back from Costa Rica in mid August. It was $450.00 from WASHINGTON/DULLES. Several days later I noticed they added a $65.00 "fuel surcharge" each way, and it's still there. It seems there is a crack in the airfare pricing for some domestic airfares in the past few days......let's hope it spills over to trips to Central America. ![]() Zebra |

I wish they would follow, but I don't think they will. There are less flights now with more travelers. That means continued high prices no matter what the cost of oil. I hope I am wrong. |

Guess it depends on the route. A neighbor just returned from Miami on an AA airbus 300. There were about 30 passengers total in coach. He mentioned to the flight attendant he had never seen so many empty seats on that flight. She told him it was happening frequently lately. This morning got an alert from AA that SJO/MIA was on sale. Maybe there is some hope for lower fares. |

Having worked in and around the airline industry for about 30 years, (and my father before me) I can say with confidence that there is no set rhyme or rhythm to how airfares are set. Mostly it is what the market will bear. Airlines compare many factors. Actual costs, load factor (% of seats filled to seats available), total demand, # of flights offered by competition, and of course price charged by competing airlines. Some instant sales will occur if a large percentage of unsold seats are predicted from a certain city pair. i.e. MIA-SJO. So it is just best to check often and be ready to buy. And remember that fares usually fall during the off season for travel. Good luck, have fun and please make sure you seatbacks are in the upright and locked position for takeoff. ![]() |
