Colonial Casino Restaurant Review
Monday, Aug. 28, 2006.

I took my date to the restaurant at the Colonial for a little postcoital dinner and was very pleased with the food quality, if not completely enamoured with the prices.

Dinner for two consisted of two servings of ceviche, sopa de amriscos (seafood soup) for her and sopa de tortilla for me. She had a ginger ale, I had a Cuba Libre. Total cost = $20.00 U.S.

Both the food and the service were marvelous.

I forgot to request the lower price lunch menu, but I won’t complain about twenty bucks either. The ambience is, well…it’s a casino, complete with slot machines clanking and guys shouting when a roulette number or dice combination was hit. Despite the fact that gamblers are notorious smokers, there was no hint of cigarette smoke in the area of the restaurant where we sat.

I’ll go back. This was truly a great dining experience. And at 1:00 a.m., it is one of the few downtown options for dining. Others include Nuestra Tierra, other casino restaurants and Chelle’s Soda. Even the News Café is closed by then.

Try it, you’ll like it.

El Ciego, your a 100% on the mark. I've eaten there twice and the service and food are very good. A little pricey but consistent. Plus the added feature of a live piano player. Next time I'll ask him to play the old Boggy 'play it again sam' tune.

I totally agree. I am a big fan of the Colonial. I sometimes have something off the menu. It's chicken breast (plancha) in white mushroom sauce. I have found that in the dining area it is usually peaceful and on occasion, they have a guy playing piano.

Usually in SJ for 2 weeks at a time and have dinner at least 7 times at the Colonial; I only eat there though if the black guy is working, which is most nights, he is excellent and makes the experience enjoyable.

Have they reopened the main dining room?

A few weeks ago that area was walled of for remodeling and only a few tables by the bar were available.

As of last Mon. night no, they only had 6-8 tables in by the bar near the piano. By the looks of the remodel project it will be a while. VB said they are also expanding out the front of the building, maybe going to add some tables out front on a patio setting?

I have to concur with the previous posts. I've always thought the Colonial
had great food. And, as I recall, they make pretty good Bloody Marys!
I also enjoyed eating upstairs in the Sports Book area.

The dining room is still under construction. The only seating downstairs is the few tables in the bar area. They set up some tables unstairs temporarily for dining. I am told that they will be expanding the dining room outside for some patio tables.

ALWAYS ask for the bar menu. It's the same food for half the price. They think it's funny when the stupid Gringos order off the "stupid Gringo menu" To the guy who spent $20 with his chica....it was the seafood soup that was expensive. The chicas know it and like to order it.

They do have a nice breakfast there. Pretty good service as the food came out pretty fast. I had the Tico breakfast which included ham, eggs with cheese and sour cream, and either toast or tortillas. My date had the french toast which was also pretty good.

I took my date there one morning. As she chatted away on her phone I snuck downstairs and played some Roulette. Bet $20 on 1-19 and won, so it paid for my meal. Gotta love it!
