Post subject:  Aparthotels, weekly apartment rentals, etc....

Hi All,

I subscribed to CR VIP status around the first of May of this year, but I have not had time to access the forums much in the last few months. I live in Lima, Peru but I have decided to check out Costa Rica and possibly stay long term. I am looking for weekly apartment rentals (or aparthotels)in SJ with easy access to clubs, restaurants, shopping, etc.... I was last in CR in the mid-80`s and I`m sure it has really changed (in addition to prices).

Any and all ideas are welcome !!

P.S. - I may be arriving to San Jose as early as the middle of next week.

Hola LL,
try a search here on aparthotels and apartments, and here is an old post on the 3 most popular apartments in SJO, not sure if the prices are still current.

There are basically 3 different apartment groups most commonly listed on this board.

Linda Vista Aptos. are in an area known as Calle Blanco and are about a 20-25 minute walk north of the gulch or 10 minutes by bus. They cost between $125-145/wk. Its farther than the others but also the cheapest. Don Gordo got mugged near there not long ago and some say the neighborhood is rough. I didn't find it any worse than many other parts of SJ. Take a cab after dark if that makes you feel better.

The Scotland Aptos are about a 10 minute walk east of the gulch around Calle 25(?) (its actually indicated just off the edge of my map) and runs $250-350/wk. The $250 studios are similar in quality to Linda Vista's. The $350/wk apartments are much nicer but cost nearly as much as a hotel. Its not a bad neighborhood, but then I said that about Calle Blanco.

The Sudamer Aptos. are the one El Ciego and Y.O.M. stayed at on their last trip and I believe Don Gordo has stayed there as well, but I haven't seen them for myself. They are a little closer to the gulch but about 7 blocks to the south at Ave. 14 y Calle 7 (not far from Pantera Rosa and Ilusiones MP). They run $160/wk. The neighborhood is supposed to be like Morazon Park after dark but again I haven't really explored that neighborhood.

Do a search here under "apartments "with me as author and you will get detailed info on these places and a few others

I personally like Vista Linda and have stayed there numerous trips and will be there in about two weeks. Carlos has done some improvements over the last year or so and they are even nicer than they were when I first started staying there. An addition I really like is he has added safes which most apartments don't have in San Jose. Price is still the same or was a couple of months ago. actually the neighborhood is not bad at all( a decent local working place nieghborhood but wouldn't walk there far alone at night and would exercise caution keeping a watchfull eye at the bus stop after dark. Many may even want to take taxis after dark.rbc100

Hola Limalion,

I really like the Sudamer for the price. The two dozen apartments are about half and half. That is, half are rented longterm and the other half of the apartments are for week to week rentals. The place is two stories high with all apartments arranged around a central courtyard. The building is secure with a double-locked iron gate at the entrance. Carlos Eduardo the owner has recently installed wireless Internet for guests. The neighborhood is pretty tranquilo during the day, but it does indeed get freaky at night. Transvestites, teenage (illegal) street girls, even a few gunshots heard in the night, none of which confronted me personally. Very close to a little grocery store, Pantera Rosa nightclub, Soda Taxista, a couple little neighborhood bars and only 3 blocks E. of Clinica Biblica, which has English-speaking medical staff and a 24 hour pharmacy. Seven blocks straight south of the W. side of Hotel Presidente. I liked the Sudamer and would certainly stay there again. Cheers.

Casa Vino is more expensive but, if one can afford it, is the best apartment that you probably can have in CR. Right next to the Amon Plaza and a couple of blocks from Zona Blue. It has location and is quiet and private. The website as follows; www.casavinocr.com.

Tony is a fine gentlemen who will probably work with you for longer stays.

Have a Great Day,

Dave
