I read this board quite frequently, and cant recall anything being touched on about the band (if you can call them that) at the SL. I love the SL...the rooms, ambience, clientele, service, owners...but WHY on GODS GOOD EARTH does someone (Bill this is you) let this disaster with instruments ruin a good thing. (for those who dont know or ever seen them, their "bass player" has been known to play outside on the sidewalk in front of the DR and KL...get my drift?).

Their 3 song repetoire No Woman No Cry, Three Little Birds, and another catchy ditty has to stop!

Last night I returned from work, enjoyed some cocktails and conversation, retreated to my room for a little siesta...and at 7 on the dot DONT WORRY, BE HAPPY...I wanted to sit at the bar again, relax, and have a bite to eat, and converse, but couldn't bear to be that close to the "Music"! So, I turned up the TV & tried to zone them out (hard to do) and waited for them to stop. When I heard them stop, I went back out (to make sure it was safe), and these dudes (the band) are all playing pool?? Now they ruin my eardrums, and now they are taking the pool table...that is for guests? WOW.

I sat at the bar, and told the guy sitting there about my "issue" with this band. He said "I know, I had to buy them a bottle of tequila to shut them up, and now they are all playing pool"! Everyone I talked to feels the same about these guys!

So, I grabbed a cocktail, and went back to my room asap...and low & behold they started right back up in about 15 minutes! AHHHHH

So, I leave this to the board (and I hope Bill reads as well.

Hey Papi...let's have dinner at the SL tonight. What time does the music start? Don't worry...be happy is my favorite. Perhaps they could bring in Tubaman for a special performance. Maybe they could add those assholes that sell the whistles on Central too.

Papi - you got lucky - I've rarely ever seen them take a break (usually playing for at least two hours straight). Even the guy doing weak versions of "classic rock" chesnuts with the midi keyboard setup was more tolerable.

How about something like the authentic Latin music duo I saw playing and singing beautifully (and quietly) down at Amon Plaza on an early trip? Or is the problem that someone that good would have to be paid instead of just partaking of the tip jar?

I love the SL, but truly - these guys and a few of the other regular "characters" around there really need to go...

When I first heard about this group playing at the SL, the early reports of their volume level alone set me to searching for alternate accomodations.

Competence and breadth of repertoire questions aside, the high volumes insisted upon by would-be and wanna-be musicians disturbs me.

I want to converse at the bar, meet ladies, talk to other CRT'ers. As I can neither read lips nor see hand gestures, I depend upon my ears for communication. If this conjunto makes such verbal conversations impossible, Bill will lose my business, and I mean right now.

I have not yet heard these merry musicians yet, so perhaps I am overreacting. However, I've promised myself that the moment verbal communication in the bar, near the pool table or in the atrium becomes impossible, I will be packed and gone before you can say, "Pura vida."
:!:

BTW, I like Peter's music. Unlike GR, I don't find his performance to be bad at all. Weak? Not too weak. What do you expect, GR? The dude is using a band-in-a-box, a guitar, a headset Madonna-mic and about 5 watts of amplification. I think our pal from Rhode Island does very well. :D

You are not overreacting EC, the trio literally drove us out of the place one Sun. night a few weeks ago. We went there to eat and could not even carry on a conversation in the bar area so moved out to the sofa lounge, then after dinner could not move on out to a taxi soon enough. It was pretty funny at the time but would not have been had I actually been staying at the SL and unable to get away from them. Don't want to hurt anyone's feelings but a couple hours of those guys will last me a lifetime. :D Papichullo you must have missed the comments posted about them a few weeks ago...

Paco - I must have missed the comments, but I thought, even if they were mentioned in a trip report or other, they deserve a thread of their own, and hopefully (soon) we wont have to see or hear them again!

I honestly think they hurt the SL business (most live music is meant to help). I would have hung at the bar and had some drinks and dinner...but instead I was forced to my room.

I may take some guff for saying this but I think you guys are being a little cynical. Yes it's kind of stale the repetoire but it's a nice touch, a little live reggae, adds a festive atmosphere and gets the drinks flowing and the senioritas feeling a little happier. All part of the SL thing. There's been a few times that music woke my napping ass up to make a night of it, for which I was glad.

Torker - believe it or not - I actually felt the same way as you for maybe the first four or five exposures. But they really don't wear well. And the way sound carries in that place, they need to crank down the volume a bit (I don't think they even use mics, but somehow they're loud as hell) so you can at least have a conversation above the din.

And a little variety as far as the musical acts playing there certainly wouldn't hurt.

GR...now you are really getting picky. I think their repetoire of
1 Don't worry,be happy
2 Don't be happy,just worry
3 You worry,I'll be happy
4 You be happy,I'll worry
5 You be happy and worry and I'll do nothing
6 I'll be worrying and happy and you go home

are all Grammy award winners in SPECIAL catagories

Papi...

enjoyed our " conversation" at the bar the other night....

except...

for having to scream at each other to hear above the backround
noise called " music"...

Reminded me of sitting at the rail at Presidente while attempting to eat or talk....

God, come to think hope Bill doesn't Bring in Tuba Man to join the group

My vote.... can the "music"

Peace

Six months ago, I was staying in a ground floor room in the new wing (Las Palmas, I think) and the band's music was loud enough to interefere with TV viewing. I can deal with the small repertoire, and some of the chicas seem to like the music, but for Pete's sake, turn down the volume!
