You can book some cheap flights on AA right now. I don't know what their CR fares are but, for example, they have a lot of availability from ATL to Rio for under $600 through October. If you book a flight before May 31st under that promo code it gives you almost 36,000 miles. Many flights during that period are coming up below $600 with a couple weeks notice. July is running around $750. Perhaps your city is similarly priced? AA requires only 40,000 miles ATL>Rio from August 16-November 30; and March 1-May 31. So for making that trip under this promo you get 36,000 miles. If you: sign up for the citibank card(25,000 miles); book the flight online at AA.com(500 miles); pay for it with the citibank AAdvantage card(600-750 miles); and use the promo code for double miles and book by May 31st(36,000 miles), you get about 62,000 AA miles for taking one flight to a great destination.

Of course, YMMV. :)

TF, nice research. I have quite a few AA FF miles. Might finally look at Rio during the dates you mentioned. But for now, I guess it's CR..........again.

FWIW, to use the promo code you have to have an AAdvantage number already. What you do is sign in under your AAdvantage number at aa.com then find that promotion from menus on the left side:

AAdvantage> AAdvantage bonus offers> Airline offers> then click the one that says earn double miles and click the red "register" button.

It sends you a confirmation email to the email your AAdvantage number has on record. Anything you book by May 31st on AA.com automatically gives you the promotion award provided you book online and are logged in or enter your AAdvantage number when booking. You can view the details and restrictions but I believe the major one is to book online at aa.com.

I just got off the phone with AA Advantage Customer Service. I actually talked to a real person.

The double miles offer (code DBL06) is a great offer, but you've got to do everything inside of their parameters. You must register online, and (as already stated) you must have an AAdvantage number. You must register the code on your AAdvantage Account before May 31st, and you must also book your future (May through November) flight(s) before May 31st. You have until November 15th to complete your travel.

But the down side........ Any and all flights booked before May 15th are not eligible for double miles. They will not give you double miles, retroactive. This is the part that sucks. I've already booked my next 7 trips, between June and November, but I booked most of those reservations last month. Long story short....I don't get sh*t for double miles on the rest of my trips this year. This is what I get for being on the ball! Those PHUCKERS !!! :x

It's not restrictive. Naturally they give you credit for booking starting the day they announce the program til the promotion ends(May 31st). You can sign up for an AAdvantage account in a couple minutes. If you then go log on with your AAdvantage number and "register" the promo you're covered with anything you book til May 31st and travel by November 15th. Then all you have to do is book your flight online. AA has some darn low prices right now to start with. IF you know your travel dates for the rest of the year and haven't already booked with AA or someone else it's a great opportunity.

I feel your pain Mucho Gusto. Any of your booked flights cheaper now so that canceling and booking under the code is worth it?

I checked them all. 5 of the 7 flights have gone up. 2 of them are lower, but only by $14, so it's not worth the hassle of cancelling, and re-booking. No worries though. All the flights have already been booked and paid for. The hardest part is waiting for 'wheels up' !!!

I'm going to pay for this upcoming flight outright instead of using my miles. Therefore, getting the 5k miles for my June trip. I will then return in August and get another 5k, which I will book before May 31. Thus, my 10K will double to 20K. Actually, since you get 1000 for booking online it will be 2000 more. Nice addition to my FF account. With my current balance on AA it will amount to a buy one get one free deal. I'll have 4 trips and only have paid for 2. :-)

Yeap, just for this double promotion I am tempted to buy the currently expensive ticket to go back and visit CR, damn it has been awhile, earn the double miles and use it toward my free ticket later to Rio.

DAPANZ, I'm still waiting to see if you gonna make that big leap and head to Rio.

Hope those double miles goes for asia also. Just about decided to book my trip to Bangkok for Oct.
Sure would be nice to get 46,000 miles for that trip. Would have enough miles for another trip back to LOS next year.
Later, SB

My math was way off on the total miles you would get for doubling. Rio is about 4,500(9,000 RT) each way so you would end up with around 18,000 bonus miles if they doubled it, not 36,000. It is true that AA requires only 40,000 ATL>RIO the dates above but you will not almost earn a free trip flying one time and doubling the miles.

I wonder if AA charges only 40,000 during those times from most US departure cities?

Hummm....I booked a ticket for this June using my new card and received my statement today. Guess what...they only charged me the $10 Yahoo Travel fee and not for the ticket? I doubled checked with the airline and I do have my ticket.

Could it be true....I get a flight to CR for $10?????
