Received an email yesterday from a friend of mine who always stays at the Gran Via when he comes to SJO. He had heard that they were closed and asked to me to check it out.

Was talking to LVSteve and he mentioned that he was going into town and had to stop at the Perimercado next to the Gran Via and would see what he could find out.

He just told me the place is locked down with a sign in the window CERRADO. No indication that it is a temporary closure for renovation.

If they are closed permanently it is one less monger hotel in the gulch.

Weird. I stayed there in March and no one said a thing about it closing... I have a feeling it is just renovating. God knows they could use some of that!

Five trips out of 6, the latest in early March, you would have found me at the La Gran Via. I received an email March 23rd from Gran Via that they were closed for now and they suggested their sister hotel in the future. It's 5 blocks west of the Gran Via. I know nothing about the hotel. Here is their website.

YO La Gran Via:

I hope someone can find out more as to the actual status of this hotel. It was a neat place to stay due to it's location and especially rooms with balconies on Avenue Central. I stayed there on several occasions in the early 80's. Room rates were a real bargain which included breakfast and unlike the Presidente, they had plenty of sausage and bacon on the buffet. Strange how old Circus can remember their breakfast but can't remember if they were chica friendly back then.....yea, even I got laid.
