I had a meeting today with Katherine Carter (Operations manager) & Marco Male' (Food and Beverage manager) regarding the new dress code. I asked them if we could see something written to give us guidance as to what a lady should or should not wear. We see selective enforcement of the dress code and I wanted to know where one stood as far as what was written. Well there is no written rule. The dress code is just for the working girls and not for guests. They do not want the working girls to enter with shoulders, bellies or legs bare. But a guest of the hotel may wear what they want including strapless tops, micro mini skirts etc. I enforced my feeling that this selective enforcement was not acceptable and the hotel should establish a written dress code for all. It is very embarassing when one takes a guest to ones room and they are not permitted entrance. Maybe if more CRT members addressed this problem to Katherine and or Daniel we could see the end to this discrimination.

I'm not sure that I know of a actual printed dress code for anything in CR although the DR has certain "spoken" rules. I do agree with the need for some basic code although getting the "highly paid" guards to truly understand it may prove difficult. Do understand that while the Presidente allows women up to the rooms, I personally know that this is not a favorite practice for tthem. Due to proximate location in the gulch , CRS & CRT Patronage and of course dinero....it is certainly the prudent thing to do.

That's very true about reserved guests wearing just about anything. Hell, I have shoulders, belly and legs showing all the time along with my mini cut-offs, not to mention other crazy outfits I adorn myself with. Could be that's why they always book me in the baggage storage room.

And by the way, how is the lovely Katherine doing? Probably the best looking and most intelligent hotel operations manager in CR.

Although your efforts in addressing this issue are appreciated, it might be better served if Admin 1 discussed this with the management since he officially represents our band of merry men. That is, if he can squeeze it into his very busy schedule.

While I've never personally had any problems with one of my "guests" I'm not sure I understand what bare shoulders, bellies or legs has to do with ANYTHING!

I figure if you can't see their undergarmets or private areas they should be allowed in, especially when being escorted by a paying guest. It's not like they're loitering around the lobby or working the hotel.

I think that with the rise in families visiting SJ,and the eco-tourirm especially during High Season, we shouldn't be meeting on our own discussing these things.I think they will sooner throw CRT out than let us dictate policy. With the lack of Hotel rooms available this time of the year,I think we need them more than they need us. A casual mention by Admin 1 is surely the best way to handle it.

Last night at happy hour I was interested to see how MANY gals had a light jacket or wrap in their hands over their purse. I ask a few gal pals why. They said it was because of the Pres.

The smart will learn.

Also, I recall in Italy that outside the churches there were often vendors renting wraps to enter (cover shoulders and knees).

Totally agree with VB. I think it is a bit presumptuous for any member to meeting with hotel management and complaining about a policy of that hotel if they indicated that they represented CRT. If anyone has a problem they should let Admin1 handle it. What will happen if 10 individual members ask for a meeting and present ten different points of view?

As VB said we need the Presidente as much if not more than they need us.

FYI, I never indicated that I represented CRT or even that I was a member. I live at the Presidente Hotel Three out of four weeks a month Nine to Ten Months a year. I have no problem with any rules of the Hotel only that they are selectively enforced. This is what I discussed with management. Discrimination. As a resident of the Hotel I have the right to discuss that with whomever I wish. The fact that they have one dress code for guests and one for visitors, is selective enforcement

I have resolved the situation for my ladies by registering them as a guest in my room rather than a visitor. As a guest she can wear whatever I want her to wear.

If Admin 1 wishes to address the situation with management I applaud this and hope that his voice is heard.

I only wished to post my experience with management and how it has been resolved.

I like the News Cafe, but I'll stick by my humble opinion, that I think the Prez is highly over rated. Unless it is strictly location. Stayed once, wasn't impressed. Everyone has their spot though.

The Presidente can't have it both ways. Either they can accept single men and their "girlfriends" from places like the Del Rey, or they can go against us. I happen to have just signed up with Costa Rica Ticas MAINLY because I wanted to stay at the Presidente with the great discount they offer. Now I fear the membership will be far less valuable to me, as I can't imagine my wanting to stay at the Presidente if they have this policy in effect. I do NOT want some guy at the door making $2/hour deciding whether or not my girl is allowed in, nor do I want the desk or anyone else telling me I can't bring a girl back to my room with me.

Look, I could see them saying, "No vulgar clothing allowed", so as to weed out some chicks coming in with their asses showing or nipples peaking out above a tiny bra, something like that. But come on, there are women in mini-skirts ALL OVER San Jose during the DAY, let alone at night. And there is certainly nothing wrong with a sleeveless blouse or even some cleavage showing!

It appears to me that the Presidente is deciding they don't want mongers and working girls there. So if that is the case, maybe we should boycott both their hotel and their restaurant. Maybe then they'll reverse this ridiculous policy.

Our only power to address this grievance is through our decision to support them or not support them. I say we let them know that we will not be supporting them until such time as they make a more reasonable dress code policy. Again, I would not blame them for not wanting someone who was dressed outlandishly, such as I described above. But come on, a girl in a mini-skirt, high heels, and low cut dress or blouse is not offensive to anyone.

As was pointed out earlier, this is admittedly a clear practice of discrimination against working girls, and - in effect - us single men who want to bring them to our rooms.

I for one have written to The Presidente asking them to explain their policy and warning them that they will likely lose a lot of business both in their hotel and in the News Cafe' if this policy is kept.

Do they have the right to set a policy like this? Absolutely! And do we have the right - even responsibility - to let them know they will be losing our business because of it. Also: yes.

I suggest a very polite and civil e-mail letting them know you may have to stop staying there if they continue this policy.

I hope Admin1 will use the power of this membership organization to convince the Presidente that this policy will hurt their business. I think if they get 20-30 e-mails from regular clients they may re-think this stupid policy. I believe it WILL hurt their business if we decide to boycott them, and I think that would be appropriate if they don't soften this policy.

As previously stated, let Admin1 handle this. He'll always negotiate with OUR best interests at heart.

If you want to send an e-mail to the Prez, go ahead, but do not mention your affilliation with CRT.

Also, there are countless other discounts that are available with your CRT membership, not just the Prez discount. But, if you're having 'buyers remorse' about joining, I'm sure that Admin1 would rather refund your money, versus taking a chance of you screwing up the relationship that CRT has with the Prez. If not, then I'll refund your $39.

I just left a 1 hour meeting with the GM of the Presidente and will reporting in a seperate thread regarding thier policies for now & in the future. As stated if you want to tell the presidente you want to no longer frequent their establishment that is fine, but do not bring CRT into this.
