Stayed at Hotel Castillo sandwiched between the SL Penthouse....long story. Darren and Arturo are excellent hosts responding to my amigos and my needs with a gracious style. We had 3 rooms on the bottom floor, each with a sink, refrigerator, coffee maker and a toaster oven. The crt discount makes this an awesome deal. The rooms were clean, air conditioned, overhead fan, dehumidifier and good sized tv. Their is no 1 chica rule :D which we pleasureably enjoyed. There is a full sized pool table in a nice side room and wireless internet throughout.
2 steps out our door was the outside bar of Sunny's Grill.....very convenient and a great place to have a small party  Typical tico breakfast included with the room but also a full menu.
I will return.

Interesting though, the safe was on the floor and you get a key to the safe. Not the electronic ones in other hotels. But still effective.

And is Castillo the hotel that checks with the guest to see if everything is ok, before they give the cedula back the girl as she's leaving?

I love this policy. I wish SL would do this.

You have to walk in with her, or come down to pick her up from the lobby. As for the leaving procedures....I am not sure as I have always walked her out....will have to ask the front desk if this is the procedure. I would assume so as the reason for taking the cedulla to begin with, but in CR, never assume!

Hi Twarag,

I'm still here at the Castillo....leaving Wednesday. It was nice to meet you at the Castillo. I'm sure our paths will cross again.

I spent Feb. 12th there before my room at the SL became available. Nice hotel. I had one of the rooms on the bottom floor right across from the bar. The water was hot.
The safe worked although as mentioned on the floor and has a key.
They take the Cedulla until the girl leaves.
They do not call you when she leaves which is fine with me.
Tico Breakfast.

General observations

Nice
Not as well laid out as the SL. Feels more like a house. I think if the courtyard was covered and turned into more common area this place would be incredible.
Good second choice if SL is full. Which it always is for last minute trips.

I spent two nights there at the start of my current trip, and enjoyed my stay. At $42 per night, with CRT discount, the standard room is great value. My second floor room was spacious and comfortable. I am planning on booking there again.

Just booked a room at Hotel Castillo, first time. It seems every freakin' hotel room in Costa Rica is occupied by gringos!!!

i'm suppose to stay at my novias apartment but what am i supposed to do when she's at work? Sit around waiting for her? Hell no!!! She does not know i'm booking a room for my daily excursions. When she goes to work, I usually tell her I spend my days hanging out with gringos looking at condos/houses to possibly purchase. She always asks me how come i'm always drinking, and i tell her it's them damn gringos always wanting to buy me a drink! she tells me i shouldn't drink to much. i can't help it. i'm going to try and take it easy this trip.... to many jaguerbombs can make you forget the night before... sometimes it's a good thing.

How far is HOtel Castillo from the Del REy? Can i walk to the DR during the day?

Five more days!!!
