I usually drink the water during breakfast at the Hotel Presidente, but I notice that they just fill it from the tap. Should I worry? Is it purified? Is tap water safe to drink? Also, whats the situation at the Del Rey and other Hotels. |

Ya roll the dice and take your chances... Of course it's purified, wink, wink.. ![]() The tap water is safe to drink in SJO, but if you tend to worry spend 600 colones for bottled H2O. |

I agree with PacoLoco. The tap water is safe to drink, almost everywhere you go. Nevertheless, I always buy the bottled water anyway. If you're worried about water quality, you better stick to bottled beer / drinks. After all, how do you think they make "ice cubes" for your drinks !??!?! No worries though. If you get a case of the shits, it's all part of the "overall" CR experience ! A little bit of aloe lotion around your brown star will take care of the excruciating burning sensation of the bung-hole !!!! (did I say that out loud) !?!???! Pura Vida ! Mikey-B ![]() |

Repeat Post for Upset Stomach Condition Quote: Purchase on your first day from a pharmacy a bottle of DIACORT..cost about $6. This stuff is GOOD. I had an upset stomach my third day and this stuff saved my ass.
Went back to my room, took/drank a shot, lay down for a few hours and was back in action that evening. Also, the tips on other previous posts about sucking on limes with your meals and beer seemed to work as well. also, the bartender at Sportmans Lodge had an upset stomach last trip and she told me she tried DIACORT and it seemed to help her as well.... worth a try...I brought a bottle back home with me too. |

Water in San Jose and throughout the Central valley is totally fine to drink. The paranoid or those with fragile digestive systems may choose to buy bottled water; I travel with a filtration water bottle, because there may be lead in the old C.R. plumbing, but mostly I drank tap water. Depending upon the season, drinking water elsewhere in the country may pose problems to some travelers. Most of the water drawn near Dominical comes from springs and artesian wells and may be contaminated with agricultural runoff. I didn't worry about it much, and in fact I never got sick once in 24 days from drinking the tap water in San Jose, San Isidro del General/Perez Zeladon or Dominical. The water near Aranel had a very slight, bitter sulphuric taste to it but wasn't bad and didn't make me sick either. I hate the idea of bottled water, simply because I hate paying for something that should be nearly free. Also, I don't like discarding numerous plastic bottles. Just a tree-hugger, I guess. ![]() |

Basically the drinking water throughout Costa Rica is very safe. There may be areas, well of the beaten track, that may lack a potable supply of water. Most guys here will never get within 50 kilometers of those areas. All that being said, I and most of my neighbors, have bottled water delivered in 5 gallon bottles. Most likely unnecessary but we all just feel a little more safe for the few $'s a week it costs. There have been articles in the Tico Times within the past 6 months of problems with the water on metro San Jose. |

A friend with a finca out in the campo brings tap water from SJ, since he got amoebic dysentery from his well. I also know somebody who got quite ill, she thought from the water in Domencal, though that was about a decade ago. At his finca, we had tea often from his well water, but nothing that hadn't boiled. |

I can attest to this stuff. It works fast. Now if I could only find a version of it here to take before seeing my ex this week. ![]() |
