You can conveniently pay the departure tax at the TACA Center at the Amon Plaza Clarion during business hours Mon.-Fri. even if you're not flying TACA or staying at the Amon Plaza. Since the hotel is only one block from ZB, it's convenient to stop in and take care of this rather than waiting to do so at the airport.

FYI - They only take cash at the TACA center in the Amon. The Presidente takes both cash and cc.

When I left San Jose back in August I didn't prepay the departure tax so I had to do it at the airport. There were perhaps 5 people in line and it took me 5 minutes to go through the process.

Good point, the lines are usually very short. But, better safe than sorry, get your tax before you leave for the airport. It's sold in a lot of places. I'd hate to be the guy who gets stuck in line for an hour.

Lines at the departure tax area are very hit or miss. Sometimes it takes less than 5 minutes to complete the entire transaction but I have also witnessed a line that almost went all the way out of the terminal. Can only guess that it would take an hour + to get through.

Really does not make sense to wait until departure time to pay the exit tax hoping the line will be short. Pay at the booth in Immigration when you arrive, a bank downtown, TACA at Amon Plaza or if you are staying at the Presidente pay it there.
