just back from SJO. stopped by Amistad 2x for dinner. can't say enough good about the food and service. i heard the train once...can understand that some may be more sensitive to the noise. didn't get to meet Matt or get a tour of the place, but what i saw from the lobby i was impressed. plus i learned this is where all the cool K*ds stay...jaja

i'll definitely check availability here on a future trip.

Will do Matt. The reality though is that you run a great operation even without the tour. I have loads of respect for what you have created. Looking forward to next weeks adventure.

look, no reason to get all defensive. I had the penthouse, it was a tremendous room. but when that stupid little commuter train came through at 5:30, I had the windows open that are right by the bed for the beautiful breeze that came through and Wow! Hello! good morning!

Other than that? The food was great, the staff was cool and the deal was fantastic. I just can't believe I'm the only/first one to mention that damn train horn...

and who am I? Well I was your customer, and a good cash paying one at that. If you can't take any quasi negative feedback, try something other than a service industry. No need to personally attack anyone. Thought the was the "Raw and Uncensored" review... at ease folks, it's not that serious.

:P

Are the maids still doing laundry? To me this was one of the best perks that LaAmistad has.

Hank, they still do your laundry. I had a few things washed last Sunday morning. When I came back to my room that evening my clothes were folded and placed on the bed. I tipped the maid a few colones.

I stayed at La Amistad for 6 nights last week, during the Halloween festivities. As usual, everything was fantastic!

Matt, Don, Rudy, Carlos and the rest of the staff always make me feel at home, and IMO the all-inclusive plan is the best deal in San Jose, hands down!!! And Jose the chef??? Fuhgedaboudit!!! Every meal we ate there was anywhere from good to outstanding! And for 6 days and nights, we drank like fish, never worrying about how much our bar tab was gonna be!

My wingman and I also took advantage of the free laundry service and the free transportation to Jaco, as well as the free ride to the airport when we left town. And everything went off without a hitch! Honestly, as a business owner myself, I have no idea how La Amistad can offer so many great specials and STILL make money, but I hope they are, and I hope they continue to keep up the good work.

I've always loved Sportsmens Lodge and I always will. But for the past 3 - 4 years, due to the extremely successful bar/restaurant/hotel/gathering-place that Bill has built, it's been increasingly difficult to get a room there, especially on short notice and/or on a "special" weekend. And kudos to Bill & his staff for this! But I will always continue to stop in there daily for drinks, chicas, etc. And as a customer, it's good to know that there's another great place in town, just up the street, where we can stay and get away from the hustle/bustle if we so desire and bring our chica's, have a drink, eat a great meal and just relax...all for a great price!

And the train noise?? IMHO, it's no big deal. Besides, the train is usually only 2 or 3 cars long, so if you're in a room where you can hear the noise from the train, it only lasts about 20 seconds or so and then it's gone! It's not even an issue for me, as the benefits of staying there FAR out-weigh the minor inconvenience of a train passing by every so often.

Thanks again to Matt and his staff for another great stay, and I look forward to the next time. And for those of you who may be worried that San Jose is going downhill.... don't worry. There's still plenty of chica's willing to "court" you, and plenty of choices to stay that won't hurt your wallet.

Pura Vida,
Mucho Gusto

Stayed at LA last week at the beginning and end of my trip. Must say I honestly do not think I would have enjoyed my trip half as much had I stayed anywhere else. I stayed on the inclusive package and much say it was a great value. Really don't understand why you would stay and not be on it.

Rooms
I stayed in a few. The queens were nice. Basically a place to stay, sleep and other things. Very clean with comfortable beds. All the rooms had nice bathrooms with large showers. Good digital safes in the rooms. Free direct phone calls from the rooms back to the States.

Did stay in one of the penthouse rooms on my last and have to say - Wow. Huge room with a loft, wet bar and fireplace. Bigger than some apartments I have had. Had to invite people over for drinks just so I did not feel it was all wasted.

Restaurant
Very much enjoyed the food and service in the restaurant. The waitstaff was attractive and friendly (but not too much so). Menu had good variety and was well prepared. Had a wonderful beef wellington (actually was so good I had it twice). I am a big guy and have to say the pork chop is downright scary it is so big, more of a pork roast. I drank beer most of the trip and will say that it was always ice cold at the bar.

Amenities
The inclusive package includes a ton. The biggest will be the new bus to Jaco. For now Matt is making sure you get there whichever ways works best for you. Bus will be huge! Did take advantage of the laundry service and everything came back clean and nicely folded. Missed out on real massage because I didn't think about it till too late in the day but seems like a great deal.

Staff
Everyone was great. Matt, Don, Rudi and Carlos and everyone else were basically willing to do whatever it took to make people happy. Very service oriented staff.

Atmosphere
This is what made the place for me. I am sure it is just an extension of the people running it, but most of the people staying here were very cool and friendly. That even goes for most of the people that just come to dine here. I arrived on a Sunday and it was busy, so I asked someone sitting alone if I could sit at his table. Without hesitation, he asked me to join him. Turned out to be a great guy from Texas on his way back to the States from the Mideast. Saw him all week. But this was the way the dining room was all week. Haven't has this easy of a time meeting friendly people since college. That was just the vibe of this place. I was travelling alone and ended up making a number of new friends with who I could hit all the places in town and in Jaco with someone to watch my back. Final thing I liked was the lack of professionals at the bar. It was nice to have a place to hangout before heading out or after you were done that someone wasn't bothering you the whole time.

Overall a great stay. Matt keep up the good work

We DO NOT allow ladies to solicit at the bar. You may bring in as many as you like as long as they are accompanied by you. It is safe to assume that if there is a single lady at the bar she is accompanied and her companion is either in the bathroom or elsewhere in the hotel. That being said we do get the occasional lady that comes in for the food. They are aware that they are not allowed to solicit inside and if caught will be asked to leave. We keep this policy to provide an oasis within the gulch.

It was not my intention to mislead regarding the policy at LA. I was just stating what I saw one late evening. Thanks, for clarifying this, Matt.

Not taken that way. I was just clarifying for everyone because at times there is confusion. If anyone has questions on our policies it is best to contact the hotel direct.
