A recent interview with the head of security for El Al described in pretty substanial detail how they do it. A highly trained psychologist in interrogation chats with 1-2 minutes with every passenger boarding an El Al plane from anywhere in Europe.

Sounds like a great idea. However, like a political sound byte it sounds good but is not feasible. In a isolated case, one small airline, it may work but it would never work in a large real life situation.

Lets take Atlanta Hartsfield Airport as an example. In 2005 they had a passenger count of 85,900,000 passengers. Assuming a 50/50 split between departing and arriving passengers we are talking about 42,950,000 to be screened by a highly trained psychologist prior to the rest of the normal screening procedures. Using the average of your 1-2 minutes it would require 122 highly trained psychologist every hour of every day to be on duty at just this one airport. Since they would only work 5 days at 8 hours a day we would need 514 highly trained psychologist just to staff the Atlanta Airport. Now factor in all the airports in the US and we are woefully short of the necessary trained people.

I am sure everyone has seen the fiasco at London's Heathrow airport this week when all they did was ban most carry on items. Imagine adding a 1 1/2 minute of interrogation to that process and you have effectively shut down the air transportation industry.

As I said before, the Devil is in the details.

El Ciego,
I hope you're right about the $25 charge for having an overweight bag. I think some airlines have raised it much higher.

Wit,

The $25.00 charge was disclosed to me via telephone yesterday. I was speaking with one "Jeffrey" in Continental Airlines' International ticketing, who explained that any one bag weighing more than 50 pounds but less than 70 would be assessed a $25.00 overweight baggage fee.

Again, this affects me a little differently. I need one free hand at all times (insert joke here), and multiple suitcases are not an option for me. Yes, airport skycaps and others could help me, but once I leave the airport, one rolling suitcase is quite enough for me to handle and still be able to use the white cane. Most backpacks cannot be checked, because they have unremovable straps. I was going to carry heavy items (bottles of shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash, booze) on the plane with me, thus saving weight in the checked bag. Won't happen now.

Immigration line was about 25 deep at that time no reason why. Lines to get to the ticket counters themselves were OUT OF THE CONCOURSE and into the street. I think every airline has flights very early as I have never seen that but it has nothing to do with Security screening & there were many Eco Tourist shirts.

Yo G Man,

to advise CRT members of how to expedite airport clearance procedures:
1. Get your departure tax [ impuesta salida ] $26.00 paid in advance , and not have to wait in that long, looooong, line at the airport . At numerous banks,, most easily at BCR across from Hotel Morazan, a block down from Del Rey. Anytime you exchange your sheckels, dinars , or US dolares for Colones { to relieve your Cojones}
Be sure to bring your Pass port :!:

2. After obtaining your document 'salida impuesta,', go to American Airlines office either in Escazu Centro Robles,, or in Sabana Este down a bit from Max o Menos on the road to the airport the day before departure . NOt Before-- only THE Day Before.

GET a PRE-CLEARANCE, boarding pass stamped " DOCS OK"

At the airport,, about 60-80 min ahead of time, instead of 3 hours,

go into the AA right hand lane with very few people [3-5] , do not need to get your bags hand searched , and go to check-in search lines rapidly.
Last few times,, about 10-15 minutes max .

Maybe a bit longer with new paranoid measures inspired by BIG BROTHER :( and TSA clones

Hope things get back to normal before my next trip after Hurricane season is over -- late Oct. :?:

Pura Vida,

Cygnus

Britian makes a sensible move...

Quote:
This isn't racism. It isn't bigotry. It's simply common sense. You receive a threat from members of an identifiable group -- and you concentrate your response on the members of that identifiable group.
It's not racial profiling. It's not religious profiling. It's terrorist profiling.

Britian To Start "Terrorist Profiling"

The government of Great Britain is working with airports to implement new security protocols. The plan is to look for people that behave suspiciously, have unusual travel plans or are of a certain religion or ethnicity.
The move also came after former Scotland Yard chief Lord Stevens said airport chaos could be reduced by targeting passengers for more rigorous checks, with "young Muslim men" a focus.
