i almost always come in west. the curving visual approach can be semi abrupt or endlessly curving. my second most interesting landing was an endlessly curving approach, and from my window seat i could see the ground coming up fast.
many people braced for a hard landing as it was all but certain we would hit left wheel first and the angle seemed extreme enough that a wing tip graze wasn't out of the question.
it did hit left wheel first but it was followed quickly by the right in a boof boof succession. funny thing was, i was relating that story as we came in to miss the runway.

SJO's runway is just shy of 2 miles (1.87) at almost 9900 feet long. It is built on a slope, but not an unusually steep one. It's not unusual to have bit of slope for airports built near mountainous terrain. The east end of the runway is a little over 100 feet higher elevation than the west end. Airports in the USA like Burbank and Las Vegas have similar slopes. There is a standard ILS (category 1) used when landing to the east. There is no instrument approach straight in when landing west because of the terrain to the east.

I'm not a pilot so I can't speak first hand, but I've gotten the impression from the pilots I fly with that they don't mind the slopes too much. What they hate is when there is a "hump" or rise mid way down the runway. The one in Puerto Plata, DR is like that. It can really reduce braking effectiveness and even toss the plane back in the air if you are carrying speed or not dumping lift. Pretty scary taking off that runway in DR when there's like a 50 foot drop to the ocean right at the Eastern end of it.

When I left SJ last visit, we took off on 25 and did a big loop around to the right as we departed. The weather was patching thunderstorms all around but just as we went over Poas Volcano it was crystal clear. Perfect view to end my last trip :)

If this ever happens to you the best thing you can do is be grateful the pilot did not press a bad situation by landing under unsafe circumstances. He did exactly what he was supposed to do. An analogy I have used in the past is driving down a highway and all of a sudden you realize you didn't plan properly, your exit is coming up sooner than you expected and you're in the left lane. Rather than cut sharply across 5 lanes of highway to make the exit, you calmly start working your way over, catch the next exit, then backtrack to the correct exit.

I saw some idiot try that very same maneuver a couple of months ago. After barely managing to avoid hitting the car in front of us and a semi in the slow lane, he ended up flipping his car a dozen or so times when he hit the ditch because he was still too late to make the exit.
