I've owned rental property before in CR and did just fine with it. I would recommend posting your question on an international or costa rica real estate forum- most of the people here are very negative towards the concept.
I must admit that you more than held your own as far as explaining the "ins" & "outs" of owning real estate in CR and left me with the impression that it is certainly do-able, but fraught with issues and I am not sure that the pluses outweigh the minuses, but I will continue to keep my eye out for the opportunities that there might be. I think that owning a rental property in the greater San Jose area marketed towards travelers who want to avoid a hotel might be a good proposition.
