Morazan does not have a chica fee, you can also bring more than 1. Agree on Del Rey, I haven't stayed there in 14 years. Have tried several hotels over the years. Presidente was great until the policy changes and taking out the bar and restaurant. Morazan location is second to none. You have to look at as many rooms as possible, some are much better than others (showers, noise, view, etc). If it were not for location I would pick Sportsman Lodge. Will be at Morazan Jan 14th. $52 a nite, breakfast and tax included.Breakfast is very good here. All things considered, Morazan is not a bad deal.

I could have written the above post; agree w/ you 100% :) Stayed there many times - only slight disagreement is the breakfast at the Morazon; barely adequate - IMO.

Baker Island - good post, always intersted in other places - we agree on much; however 15kc is about $30 - tells me they don't want my business - I can find a laundry; my days of "sneaking" and paying a BS fee are over - still, nice to know about anotther place - I also like the low end places you mentioned, but do find them hit or miss :)

up above CLN20 says

"I've stayed at all, and am definitely a Amistad guy. Not that the others were bad, but I liked the no chicas at Amistad."

does he mean that no chicas are allowed, that none are to be found, or that there is no chica fee? I am planning to stay there next month (first timer) and certainly don't want to stay at a place where chicas not allowed!

He means that, unlike the Sportsmens or the Del Rey, there are no chicas sitting around waiting for customers.

You can definitely bring your own chicas. There is no chica fee.

Amistad is noisy and outdated rooms. Sportsmens is good in the new wing. Dunn Inn is decent but no scene.

What?? La Amistad is noisy and outdated?? Since when?? LOL

I would have to disagree--it is comfortable, and the noise is no worse than anywhere else--they have been making updates and renovations...I guess it is all in the eye of the beholder. One half dozen of one vs another half dozen of another--its a wash.

I would make some clarifications of why you think these things--

What is the most important trait or characteristic to you?

Why?

What are your top 3 characteristics for a hotel? (listed in priority of importance)

To make a blanket statement like that doesn't really help anyone guage your the information in your post--

i agree with your comments about the Sportmens and the DI but, with respect to the LA. Just how is it outdated? i have stay in several rooms there and found the comparable with other rooms in San Jose.

The Amistad is a former mansion, and the extensive reconstruction-remodeling has largely kept that ambience. The place has 'character", the rooms are a little quirky, no two are exactly alike. I've stayed there once when the remodel was just getting underway, back then it truly WAS outdated. I wound up being stuck in the former room 104, it was this corner place stuck behind where an office used to be, and it was bad (very cramped with dinky double beds jammed in leaving little walking room, 9" TV hanging from the ceiling among other features), even Matt said that it was one of the worst rooms. He actually gave me a discount on on the penthouse room 310 for a future stay as compensation. :D Now the large beds have Tempur-Pedic mattresses and flat-panel TV's. True the hardwood floors amplify the sound of chica heels, but since the Amistad is more or less the SL "annex" you have to get used to it. :D

I've also stayed in the "studio apartment" room 106, also before the remodel had reached it (it did in fact reach the two rooms across the hall from it during my stay, workers started to remove and rip out stuff from them). Back then it was pretty spartan, now it's a pretty deluxe junior suite-like room. One time I also was able to look around inside the new "penthouse" room 202 (it was unoccupied and the door was left open), man that room was as good as anything in the Presidente, if not better.

OK, I am staying at the Hemingway Inn this week 1/16-1/23. Calvin is nice guy, acquired the place in October, fixing it up, not fancy, quiet, friendly staff, more like a b&b than a hotel. I'd stay here again. my 10 colones. HLH just down the block, and SL just around the corner, so plenty going on nearby. The Peruvian cafe across the street from the HLH is great for lunch, I am going to try the French cafe across the intersection from the HLH today for lunch. btw, Lily at the HLH, oh how nice.

That French restaurant on the corner of the intersection across from Hotel Little Havana is definitely worthwhile. They have a great lunch special for 3500 colones......and of course, Soda Peru, just up the street from HLH is another great mealtime option.

I should clear this up.

Amistad is noisy because of the train. The building literally shakes.

Hmmm.

Have you personally stayed in a room at HLA?

Just to interject my 2 cents. I have stayed there and so have several people I have met over the past couple of years. The train is a big factor, but it doesn't bother everyone the same. It's not noisy per se, unless they blow the whistle. If you're staying on the west side of the hotel, you can barely hear it at all. The first time I noticed it was in the bar. I thought we were having a mild earthquake. From flying all the time, I'm sensitve to shaking (buckle up). It wakes me up.

I'm also a late sleeper and the horn is loud. I can hear it from the north side mansion rooms at SL, although it doesn't usually wake me up there.

SR

Thanks, that was my point of my post. Factual information like you provided is one thing, but to make a blanket statement like "The building literally shakes" is another.

I've stayed at Amistad several times over the past few years. I'm not a sound sleeper, so you can take what I say with a grain of salt. Based on my personal experiences with the following rooms, I can say:

- In 202 you won't notice the train pass unless they blow the horn, and I do not recall the building "shaking" when I stayed there. Then again, this room is on the west side facing the street going down to Sportsmen's, not the train track street.
- In 212 you may notice the train pass, but it will be a low rumble. No room-shakin' unless you're doing it with your chica.
- In 203 you won't notice a nuclear bomb going off - no windows, enclosed, and on the west side of the hotel. Alas, no outside windows though.
- In the 100 rooms off the to the side, ditto.
- Now, in 312, 313 and 311 you WILL feel the train. It's possible the "building-shaking" poster was referring to these rooms - they are at the highest level of the hotel after all. Ditto for 201 - it faces the east side of the hotel.

Now, I am a SL fan so HLA is usually my second choice. I have also heard the train horn FAINTLY while staying in Mono, which is as far away as you can get from the train inside the Sports.

Mis dos colones,

mh

I stay at LaAmistad about 3 times a year...In my first stay I would wake up cuz of the horn. Well since Matt has Paid for the crossing guards the train don't bother me anymore. Sometimes I feel the shake, but no big deal.
Matt, Staff, the Rooms and price make up for the train.
I'm visiting in during Super Bowl but made my Res to late and no room at the Inn....so game plan "d"..

I am ultra-sensitive to the shaking. It's easier to wake me up by touching me than by shouting. It's most noticable in the bar area, ground floor, near the tracks. Like I said, the first time I thought it was an earthquake. As you move up the floors and away from the east side of the building, it's less noticeable. i assume the shock dissipates the higher you go from ground level.

Every hotel, espcially in San Jose, has its little quirks. This is definitely not a stab at LA, just a "you need to be aware" to anybody considering it for the first time.

SR

I've gotten so that I actually enjoy the whistles and the shaking, I don't know why, maybe just another reminder that I am in Disneyland, "Mr Frog's Ride." By the way, Srlm, I like the way that your new tagline is a subtle reference to DATY.
