If you like strip clubs I would recommend Le Grillon. It's a short walk from the Doral.

I would NOT recommend walking in that area, even a block or two. I once tried to walk to the corner to catch a taxi after coming out of Le Grillon and the bouncer ran after me and pulled me back near the enterance and said that it's "very dangerous" here.

If you are one of the guys that jumps in a taxi as soon as the sun goes down than it's probably best that you continue to do that.

Yes I am, and I will tough guy. Not only that, I usually take taxis during the day too. I walk as little as humanly possible. You keep walking around town after dark. May I suggest a leisurely, slow-paced walk around the area of 6th street and 6-8 avenue after dark. For the full experience, wear a nice watch or a gold chain around your neck.

Myself, the Angler and another guy very stupidly and drunk walked from LeGrillion to Molina Rojo late on night a few years ago. Had a great time that night but was lucky

I agree and although some people speak highly of it, I believe only a small percentage of CRT's would stay there. I talked with a dude who checked in there because of positive comments on this board and then checked out a few hours later saying never again.

You talk alot for a guy that takes cabs during the daytime as well. If you run out of money while you are here maybe you can wait tables at puchos or something.

I realize there's nothing like personal experience but:

And TA's take on it--very mixed reviews and no word on Chica-friendliness:

Have always walked to and from the Johnson during the day, but more cautious at night. The few times I have walked back at night, I do it from the Avenida Central side and walk quickly. We won't even talk about the old days 10 years ago when I would stumble back there from the Del Rey at 3 in the morning. :( Guess God was watching over a dumb drunk...

It's your time, money and experience--spend them any way you see fit. Knowledge is power, to corn a cliche.

If a component of your vacation is possibly getting robbed, than Hotel NJ is perfect. Seriously though, how can you in a right mind recommend that place to any gringo? It is dangerous, dirty and lacks ANY services, even the ones you take for granted.

Unless that venue and/or that area has seriously degraded in the last 2 years, it was good enough for Brother Prolijo, a very experienced traveler not known to me to be a thrill-seeker (well, not that kind anyway). I'll stand by my remarks.

JazzboCR's remarks are right on. I stayed at Johnson last weekend and same as always. The hotel itself is safe and no problem walking there up to 9 or 10 in the eveneing and after that taxi which applies to most anywhere in San Jose. Actually probaby more muggings and roberies around the Hotel Del Rey truthfuly. They have a freindly staff with very little turover. They acually now have Wifi available quite a deal for 7000 col per night. Just keep in mind quite basic but they have hot water. I have looked at numerous outher local similar places and it is as good a value as you can find for this type place. Acually quite a few gringo customers now, many more than when I first started staying there.rbc100

some people aren't happy unless they stay at a place with a dress code like the presidente.....

they feel safer....you know, no 'shady looking' dudes hanging around.
