I feel very fortunate to have been able to use my miles on Taca for a free trip over Super Bowl weekend coming up (especially with regular rates now more expensive than ever before - nothing for less than $500 out of LA practically any time over the next six months). Taca's program is really pretty good - I've also gotten free upgrades to 1st Class on my last two trips, which on a 5 1/2 hour flight are a godsend.

I have been using the Delta SkyMiles card from Amex; my last trip MSP-SJO was bought with F.F. miles, but it was during green season.

Hey...anybody thinking of just shit-canning their miles... I'll take 'em! Maybe then I could actually afford to return to Costa Rica.

How ballsy was THAT?

Seriously... I'll take 'em.

And don't forget when planning your estate: According to Travel World magazine, F.F. miles have cash value. If you have several thousand miles banked, be sure to include them in your Will. :)

EC,
How many frequent flyer miles do they charge your account for the flight from MSP-SJO?

All Delta flights from USA to Central or northern South America (Colombia, Venezuela, Peru) is 35,000 Skymiles IF you can find SkySaver seats.

Of course they will often have SkyChoice seats available at 70,000 miles, the bastards.

Delta has added an update to their website that will allow you to search for a SkyMiles seat and they also return the day before and day after.

Make sure you give an accurate approximate time of day on your search or it will say "there are no flights available".

As Witling correctly stated, 35K miles via Atlanta. I didn't have neough miles to even think about the Choice seats; I had been saving F.F. miles for three years as is. :)

I will say one good thing about USAIRWAYS Dividend Miles Program is the free, unlimited upgrades to First Class for Preferred Members. Even though I have a horde of accrued dividend miles (with decreasing opportunities to cash them in for free flights), I have enjoyed a pretty decent success rate at getting "bumped up" as a Preferred Dividend Miles cardholder.

Also, USAIRWAYS Dividend Miles never expire as long as there is some activity in your account within a 36 month period. The Dividend Miles definition of "activity" includes cashing in for award travel.

I'll second the kudos for the USAIRWAYS Dividend Miles Program. It only costs 30,000 miles for Costa Rica and all other Latin American and Carribean countries.

Just booked my last minute flight from D.C. for next week.
