The same guys that criticize the DR are the same guys that criticize the Beggars on the street that follow you to the Presidente. The same guys that freak out about the trannies in the Parque when walking back to the Sportsman's. I mean get real...
A) Unless you never leave the HDR, you're going to be accosted every single time you leave the building, whether its to go to another hotel, a restaurant, an MP, out on a tour etc.. They're not as bad at the Prez and they're non-existent at the SL, Castillo, Amon etc. and if you stay at one of those places not every trip you make is going to be to the HDR. So you'll probably have a WORSE problem with beggars if you stay at the HDR not less of one. Actually, I think the guys who stay at the HDR complain about beggars as much if not more than everyone else since they encounter them every time they go out. I wouldn't want to stay someplace where I'd be afraid to go out as I go to CR to see the country not hang out in a hotel.
B) I don't think guys freak out about trannies as much as they like to just joke around about them. I've stated in other threads that I pass them all the time and they don't even give me a 2nd look. But even if others really were freaking, a cab ride to the SL is still less than the HDR chica fee.
C) The hotel room is over $10 more than the CRT rate at the Prez and $20 more than the Morazon or Castillo and that is before the unavoidable $10 a pop chica fee which can add easily much more than $10/day for some guys. The HDR price is comparable to the pre-tax SL rate but from what I hear the SL rooms are MUCH nicer.
D) If I were them, would I charge whatever I could get? Sure. But the arguments are similar to the CIEN debate. I've said it before that I don't blame either the whores at the BM bar or the whores at the DR desks for charging every penny they can above the typical market rates as long as they can get away with it. I blame the fools that pay it. Their ability to charge that is predicated on the imperfect knowledge (read ignorance) of the average consumer. However, just because its right for them and they are acting in their interest doesn't mean it is right for you or in your interest.
E) You are on top of the action alright...it would actually be worth $10 more to me not to have beggars accost me everytime I leave my hotel, or to have my hotel management figuring ways they can soak me for extra dough, to be able to get away from the chicas for a few minutes out of every day and only enter the fray when
I feel like it, to not have the casino noise filtering up to my room 24 hours a day so I can actually get some rest in between "mongering" and going out. For me, I'm not so lazy that a one block walk seems that much farther than the elevator. That it all actually costs $10 less and not $10 more is just a bonus.
F) Oh yeah, as for point six, I'd say it is very doubtful you'd save anywhere close to $10 for being aqui. As long as you're not a long and expensive cab ride away to someplace like the BW Irazu, a 5 minute walk or cab ride is not going to make much of a difference. One could also argue that admitting that you don't mind paying a $10 chica fees may make you subject to a higher negotiating stance then if you said you stayed at hotel known for hosting large numbers of no-cien paying CRTers.
I'm not saying the HDR is totally without merits. I agree with ruffnutz that it is an experience that every newbie should try at least once. You're paying extra for the novelty of being "on top of all the action". But once you've been there and done that, you realize that it is not the best value for the money in town (for the rooms or the girls).
