I just switched to Verizon from ATT. Got sick and tired of ATT lousy customer service. Also am using an Iphone 6. On previous trips I've never had any issues with my Iphone and ATT. This will be my 1st trip with Verizon. I mainly use it for sending and receiving texts, checking voicemail messages from clients in the U.S. that may call and I will also use it to check e-mail. Mainly basic stuff. Verizon has a plan whereby I get to keep my existing plan which is unlimited call, unlimited texts and my data plan and use my existing plan in the 2 countries I'll be traveling to (Brasil and Costa Rica) and it costs me $10/day which is fine with me. I just want to know if it will work in CR as well as it worked for me with ATT. Any comments?

The main difference between Verizon and ATT is radio technology. Verizon uses CDMA and ATT (like most of the world) uses GSM. However, the Verizon phone has both a GSM and a CDMA radio in it, so you should be fine.

Google Fi works in Costa Rica - at least in San Jose. Cost is the same as the US for data. Fi uses both WiFi and cellular.

Fi works in 120 countries. No "international plan" needed. Data is the same everywhere. Text is unlimited. Some countries have extra charges for calls but it's a pittance compared to AT&T or Verizon.

It shows your US number

You can also use Google Hangouts for texts over WiFi.

Disclaimer: I'm a Google Fi user, I don't work for them

Google Fi countries

When I use Fi in San Jose, my voice calls over WiFi (local and the the US) are free. My data cost is the same as the US ($10 per Gb - I'm on a 4 Gb plan but never use 4Gb so I don't pay any extra) - it's 3g because that's what Kolbi has (yes, they are implementing 4G and LTE but not everywhere).

My 4 Gb plan is a $60 per month plan (including taxes) but I usually pay $35 (+/-) because I don't use all my data (wait, what?). $20 for unlimited voice and test (in the US) and $40 for 4 Gb of data.

However, if I don't use all my data - and I don't, because I'm usually on WiFi and don't stream movies when I'm not - I don't pay for it my "$60" a month plan costs me around $30 (including taxes) every month, even using it in CR. The first month I actually got money back.

In CR, my WiFi calls are free, my texts are free, and if I call the US (which I might do once a week) as a non-WiFi call, those calls cost $00.20 a minute.

Now, if I had a Verizon plan (and I used to) I would be paying the cost of my US Verizon plan (mine was a 2 Gb plan and cost me about $119 or so a month with taxes) plus $10 a day for their "TravelPass".

Oh, yeah, and I paid for my Verizon data whether I used it or not. And it didn't "roll over" either.

So, if I go to CR and use my Google Fi plan - basically it costs me the same as it does in the US - around $35 a month. No matter how long I stay.

Under my old Verizon plan, if I went to CR and stayed 10 days and used my Verizon plan (which I did), it would cost me $100 (plus taxes) on top of my normal $118 (+/-) for a total of $218 (plus the extra taxes).

Hmmm...

And yes, with Fi you have to use a Nexus 6, 5x or 6p (right now). It is possible to make limited (T-Mobile only for example instead of switching between the the 3 Fi carrier networks) use an iPhone, but I'll let you look that up.

If having the Holy iPhone is essential to your self worth, then I guess paying high US carrier rates is a holy sacrament with the Lord Jobs and that's wonderful.

I have a unlocked GSM cell with a Kolbi SIM also. I use WhatsAPP on that. I'm not going to make the guides, et al call me on a US number.

T-Mobile is what I use as its free text and data in most countries I visit and only .20 to csll back to the states if I need to and for me it doesn't ID me as being out of the country. The only downside is whwn here in the states the signal can be iffy at times.

This is the advantage of Google Fi. Fi uses three cellular networks (transparently - to you it's the same) - Sprint, T-Mobile, and U.S. Cellular.

I can start a call on WiFi (immediately encrypted over a VPN), then get in my car and as I pull out of my driveway it switches to T-Mobile and then as i get to the main road I'm on Sprint - but it's all transparent to me, I'm just talking.

In my home town, none of the three Fi networked carriers individually have extensive coverage, but together they all do (I used to have Verizon - while coverage was good everywhere I went, I had zero coverage at my house due to poor network engineering on Verizon's part - 3 equidistant towers, the phones never locked in to a signal, they gave me a free 'mini tower' but it only had a 20' radius).

The only reason I stayed with Verizon so long was coverage. No other carrier (by themselves) had as good coverage. With Fi combining three carriers' coverage, that rationale went away.

Plus Verizon is too damn expensive.
