If you think HDR is the worst place to stay in San Jose---You must not be very familiar with San Jose!!

Well...going to try both! Problem solved. :D As long as its safe and it appears to be relatively clean....I think trying the HDR will be a good experience. I'm going with an open mind, my next trip I can tailor it to my further wants/needs based upon what happens on this trip. But damn, how many guys in this world can say they've stayed in a hotel that big with hundreds of girls to choose from? :)

You've got it right DJ! That's exactly the way to approach it. You'll be happy you did.

For some reason, there is a cadre of HDR haters (perhaps it has a lot to do with the elevator fee, or the cien chicas that inhabit it, who knows) that will never recognize its value to the hobbyist and visitor. This does not seem to be the case with other venues. Go figure.

I've been staying @ HDR for over 10 years (as well as several others, depending on the main angle of the trip), and must say that if chicas is the objective, this is where you'll find the most convenient and diverse establishment.

After having lived in Vegas for a while...experiencing the overpriced, entitled, poor attitude rip offs here.....Costa Rica is probably paradise on Earth.

This topic has been beaten to death on this board.

The reason(s) many mongers don't bother with the HDR can be summed up in one acronym: TEHO.

If you're a sportsphucker who likes the convenience of "point and shoot", you are time constrained, you speak little or no Spanish, and you don't want to do anything else than get laid, drink, gamble, and then get laid again, HDR will be heaven.

The HDR has its place, but it is obviously not for everyone. Enjoy the experience, then make your own choices.

As a first timer that recently got back from a six night stay at HDR, I whole heartedly recommend it. I stayed during the second week of April and had an incredible time. But as someone else pointed out, I wanted the point and shoot. I speak little Spanish. The convenience of HDR cannot be beat, at least to me. Though during the day I would absolutely recommend checking out zonaii or new fantasy. I am still debating on whether or not to stay at HDR when I return in a few months. The accommodations at zonaii were incredible so that is a contender as well. But to me, and I am certainly a newbie, HDR cannot be beat for a first experience of what cr has to offer. The more I write and think about it, I just might stay there again. Have a great time!

DonJuan, you are certainly doing it the right way.

I just heard a story from a friend in San Jose about a guy who did no research and came down without even a hotel reservation. He did not even know about the girls!! His cab driver told him about the Del Rey so he got dropped off there with his luggage.  Later that night he was ready to check in to a hotel, but rather than get a room at the Del Rey, he decided to walk across Morazon Park to the Holiday Inn dragging his luggage.  He only made it part way until six guys accosted him with a razor and took everything, including his eyeglasses, money, passport, clothes, etc....all gone. Darwin's Law in action.

For me the nice thing about staying at the Sportsmens Lodge is that everything you might need or want is there or close by and many of the taxi drivers who hang around out front are honorable guys who speak some english. The gringos hanging out at the bar will most always help you if you ask. Many will take you under their wing and show you the town. The security guards vet the chicas and if you ever have any trouble in your room with a chica, all you need do is pick up the phone and the problem is addressed. :)

My dilemma is whether or not I should take the plunge and do HDR my first couple days. Seems like a lot of the vets are not fond of staying there.

Not at all, it's just fine. I've been going to CR for at least 8 years and used to stay everywhere but HDR until my last trip. I arrive next week and not even considering another hotel. Don't get me wrong, most of the reputable hotels discussed here are just fine. But there's nothing like the HDR. I liked it a lot. It's great to find one you really want and not have to deal with getting in a cab and back to your hotel. Super convenient.

You can always visit SL and Amistad and decide if the atmosphere would suit you better on future trips.

One of the reasons a lot of vets won't stay there is their rules about who can go to your room. At SL, you and your six best buddies can hang out in the room talking/drinking/smoking and it is all good. However, at DR, the only people going up to your room is anyone you pay the fee to allow upstairs. If you have friends staying there as well, it's all good but if you meet some cool guys you want to hang with and they are staying elsewhere, no way to have a room party. And trust, room parties (particularly at SL) are the BEST!!!

You're not saying the clientele at any of the other hotels is much different than that are you?

Nonsense, you lose credibility when you say something that is simply false.

Room parties can be great at SL but do you have one every night, once a trip, or once every few trips? Me, I never want strange men in my room, EVER. I found it odd my first stay at HDR that the guards had no idea whether or not I was a guest but let me on the elevator without checking for a room key. I think if for some odd reason I wanted to take strange men or a friend or two to my room they wouldn't have had an issue with it. I'll ask what the chico fee is when I check into HDR next week. :)

To each his own though.

Did PVT say anything about STRANGE men :?:

I see something about "best buddies" and "cool guys you want to hang with."

I see nothing about "strange."

Misinterpretations make credibility go downhill fast.
