not slamming ya here bud, but this is way out of date. Though I admit that my few trips have seen the 'crap' collecting more and more, the scene outside the HDR is nothing like I have read in threads and trip reports going back 2 or more years.

I have (and would again) walk with a chica to Morazan. I just haven't needed to stay there since.

This is true. I was recollecting about just that last week while there. It used to seem crowded on the corner and a gauntlet if you wanted to walk down to Aveneda Central later at night to eat, or even head back to the Presidente back when that was a hobbyist-friendly hotel. There were so many small, and large, groups you had to pay attention in case a couple broke off to follow- never happened but who knows if you look vulnerable... happened to quite a few other people back in the day. The activity was probably 10x then what is now.

I always go to Chelles late night. You really had to watch your back then, not that you shouldn't now. But it was different, there were just more people out. I used to stand back in the shadows across the street from the Del Rey and wait until people stopped glancing my way, survey down that hill, then walk when there was a clean break so I got a jump on anyone thinking about following. I was always worried about being sandwiched by a guy up the hill on the corner and an accomplice positioned down the hill towards Ave Central. Way more seedy altogether back then.

Don't even get me started on Morazon 96-99. That park was dangerous, and well know to be. Finally the police rolled in and cleaned the area behind HDR up. For several years I would not walk from HDR to Sportsmens past 9 or 10. While it's still not advisable and could be considered "asking for trouble" now, it was "begging for trouble" back then. But you see a lot of young couples through or sitting in the park well after dark than you did then, if I my recollection serves me.

If HDR has been around since 1994-1995 I imagine the Morazon park area had always been pretty sketchy.

Anyone remember the homeless younger guy and his girlfriend hanging around outside the Del Rey? Anybody see "shoe shine" lately? Gosh, that could all go back 4+ years.

I have not seen shoeshine my last three trips. I did hear some really sad news. "Marito Mortadella", the little blind man who played the ukulele for coins on central died. He apparently choked to death. I guess it was all over the local news since he was a fixture there. Iwill miss dropping a coin in his bucket and hearing him say, "gracias".

... and then there was the blood pressure guy... the nurse with a coin jar... the homeless gringo with his palm out... and the Cohiba cigar salesman. Ahhhh.. such fond memories of the gulch.

It's good to hear that the city finally decided to do something about all the bad actors that hung out in that neighborhood. I was a late night Chelles aficionado as well, and dreaded walking down that stretch of Calle 9 between Aves Central & 1st. I remember reading about guys getting attacked by machete-wielding ladrones in that area.

I last saw him April of this year.

Do you guys know the homeless(??) guy that sits in the last doorway down Calle 9, almost across the street from the Europa Restaurant? Always has a McDonalds cup he holds out?

Well, the last time I ran into Shoeshine, he was hassling me bad, and following me down Calle 9. As I passed the homeless guy, the guy stood up in front of Shoeshine, double-hand-slammed him into the street and started bitching into his face. Shoeshine bitched back, but was clearly shaken by the act, and turned and walked back to the HDR.

I make sure now to drop coins in Homeless's cup on every walk-by.

Chilli, I'm glad you took care of him . His name is Jose and if you remember Keith from the Horseshoe he always took care of Jose. Hell Keith is the one who bought him a couple of suits. Now when I see Keith after a trip he always asks me if I had seen Jose and how is he. I tell Keith I always give him a couple of colones and Gringotim and Royboy just laugh.

I've been giving him handouts since 2005 or so, there's a street guy, a black guy named "Rudy" from New York who tries to help him as well who hangs by HDR's back door, he says "Shoeshine" has been doing a lot of drugs and continues to get in fights with other local street thugs. Last he told me, he was homeless but years ago had an apartment and a girlfriend but drugs took him on a sad spiral downward.

OK,

If I didn't love HDR, here would be my choices in order of desirability:

SL.:

Small smattering of chicas compared with HDR but most of the time there's good finds, usually small but good options later afternoon and evening, also great quiet rooms in a safe quiet neighborhood with NF and numerous good tico restaurants nearby. Great dependable bar food, best atmosphere for get togethers with friends. Negative : Newbies, don't let them trick you with upfront rooms, they're loud, forget sleeping and everyone sees your movements, you'll hear street noise at night.

Scores or Zona :

Quick access to this usually well stocked with numerous proven performers group, nice rooms, I understand their bar food is ok to good. Access to great cigars. Negative : Neighborhood thuggish and long walk to get to main activity areas.

La Amistad ;

I have no idea why guys come here and INTENTIONALLY choose hotels with no chicas immediately available :? , but nonetheless they do  , for this group of oddballs and eccentrics :P , this is the choice. Great safe neighborhood like SL, very nice rooms, superb food, classy atmosphere and great massage girl.

Mona Lisa : I haven't seen the inside of this place but its in a dog neighborhood, no chicas and hearing stories on CRT from more than a few members of all kinds of problems ranging from bathrooms not working to theft's, even from the safes, followed up with dubious bs excuses from the staff crosses it off my consideration list.

Morazon. Depressing dump, when I'm on vaca I spend a little more not to be in a thug haven, and evening walks between the HDR and Morazon, although 1 measly block can get you thug hassle, and, you know, it's just plain low class. Nonetheless, for those frugal members who are often seen picking up 1/2 cigarettes from the street, it is rightfully so the cheapest option...

Presidente :

The most beautiful rooms, fabulous beds and giant great showers, a full apt suite is also available, if you want elegance, this is THE PLACE. They used to lie to you and tell you if hos didn't dress like hos they would allow them in but they didn't. Now they just don't let any in, they want to be a family hotel and mongers need not apply.

Net, I know one thing we disagree is about hotels :) :) -

The price - and ambiance, at least the room décor at the HDR - is about the same as the Morazon - last decorated during the Carter administration! I mean its not like either would be mistaken for a Ritz Carlton

Nothing matches the nonsense and the folks who hang out in front of the HDR the one block walk from the HDR to the Marazon is not even in the same league.

While I agree with your sentiments about the Presidente (that was my hotel in San Jose for years) I would not include them because of their totally restrictive policy about guests (which they lied about for well over a year) - unless you are traveling with your wife and/or family, this place should not be on any list whatsoever (guys don't read well and don't want anyone thinking this place is an option if you intend on company) B/c I liked the place so much in the past, will admit b/c they lied about their policy on guests for a long time - well over a year - the mention of the place is like waiving a red flag in front of a bull - to me

Like I think you, I prefer the area around the HDR/Morazon, simply b/c I think places like the Sportsmans and La Amistad are geographically undesirable - to me - they have plenty of guests that don't feel that way.

Frankly, I would probably recommend a first time visitor stay at the Sportsmans for a variety of reasons, ie, meeting girls, meeting a possible wingman, talking with experienced guys, etc.

PS I saw for years a shoeshine guy who hung around the HDR and the Presidente - he was - I think - a Tico who always wore a light colored suit - I'd give him a little money b/c you could not convince him that sneakers could not be polished     Plus I like the fact that he was "working" and not just panhandling - I don't think I've seen him the last few trips.

I concur, Presidente should be the last choice for a monger, but if someone who is a non monger visits, the rooms are superb, I had a suite once, fairly reasonably priced and it was very luxurious, that was back in the day many moons ago. They did allow one girl in who was one of my favorites and she was always conservatively well dressed like a business woman, but they fought me on another girl who really wasn't dressed provocatively, just a short mini skirt so I ruled them out from then on.
