Delrey has the most girls...no other hotel comes close...

All hotels combined don't have the selection of girls that delrey has...

Delrey is the best...

I agree, I know lots of guys love SL and HLH, and a few of the gentlemen out there who are -ahem- frugal (their fingerprints keep getting imbedded in their coins) like the Morazon but their selection's are always small and hit or miss. When you have over 100 putas strolling around there's got to be at least one in the bunch that you'll find acceptable...

I see a lot of talk here on CRT about walking in the Gulch at night.

IMHO, the fear is out of proportion with the reality.........if you stay sober.

I walk a lot between the popular venues up until about 10 pm or 11 pm........including through Morazon park and past the trannies on the corners. My head is not in the clouds, and I may not survive my next walk, but I have never felt threatened or in danger. Almost always, I am not within 50 feet of another person. I see a lot of cops wandering around after dark. If I don't get mugged by the cops, I think that I'll be alright.

Violent crime is such a rare and random occurrence, that I'll worry about something else..........like whether or not the LEGENDS are on duty for us.

I do too, but you and I are old pro's here and know our way around, we can blend in the crowd... these are newbie virgins and guaranteed to be wearing shorts, flower or fish printed shirts AND drunk, a perfect target !

I would not get to comfortable feeling that you can blend in with the crowd. I am sure that the average Tico blends in far better then you. An excerpt of an article that was in last Fridays (3/1/13)AM Costa Rica:

Quote:
Tourists should be the least worried about being robbed at knife or gunpoint. According to the data of such cases last year, 83 percent of victims are Costa Ricans. The foreigners robbed last year came from more than 50 nations, the top being Nicaragua, Colombia and the United States.

The Mona Lisa might end up as a good place. The rooms are nice, and away from the noise. Chica selection is limited but I got an 8, a 7, and an 8 there with good, not great, results. It's coming into its own. Plus if you don't like what you see, the HLH está a 100 metros.

I agree, I worked and lived here in 2007 thru 2009, ran a phone room for an internet gambling site, and had Costa Rican phone workers. Almost all of them had stories of being mugged, robbed, their houses broken into, held up by gunpoint at clubs, etc., even some of the "big" young Tico's. They seemed to accept it as a peril of living in Costa Rica.

When I say "blend into the crowd" I meant walk fast, know where you are going, look focused, keep your eyes open for suspicious characters, avoid the Coca-Cola area, keep to yourself and keep quiet. Still no guarantee, a thief may target you if you're on foot, especially at night, but you can at least limit your odds.

Newbies and virgins wearing shorts and loud printed shirts, drunk, loud and wandering around at night laughing and potentially confused as to where they are going are targets !

Guys trying to save a few bucks staying at Morazon have to walk that block at night if they come and go to the Del Rey, especially with a ho in high heels trying to negotiate the broken sidewalk, the small change saved is not worth it to me...

Good advice all although as a frequent guest at the Morazon, I have no problem w/ the walk from there to the HDR - I think its really overkill to take a taxi - just MHO based on many trips. Also did the walk many times from the Presidente to the HDR, before they changed their policies :(

Agree 100% w/ the advice to leave the gold at home, and while you are unlikely to be taken for a Tico, dress conservatively; leave the gold and expensive watch (or one that looks expensive) home - I have a rolex, but in Costa Rica, I wear a $20 timex <FWIW, it keeps better time than the rolex>

Best advice is just don't be stupid.

Most "bad stories" reported start with "It was late at night, I was alone, and really drunk......"

Sportsmans Lodge mansion wing is the best if you can afford it. I have stayed in the Morazon and do they still have key safes? A combination safe is the only way to go.

Re key safes: As of a month and a half ago, yes - better than nothing

Re the "trannies" in Morazon Park:

A few years ago - actually it was probably more like 8 - a friend and I were surrounded by about 4 or 5 of them, and they tried to get our wallets - since then, you don't see them in the Parque Morazon at all - maybe police presence, whatever - you do see them a few streets away, and near/in Parque Espania by the Radio Shack- but not Morazon.

Overall, you see a much higher police presence the last couple of years - more police, more vehicles, etc

While I think lists of hotels can be valuable, there is no perfect place, just one with less problems as you see them :)

Morazon safe? I had just left their casino....this was back in around 2006. I got attacked by two men dressed up as women and a driver of a car. It was about 30 feet of the entrance on the ave central entrance to the hotel. He came up and grabbed me from behind and went into my back pocket. Fortunately, I did not lose a lot of my dinero since I kept most of it in my shoe. I had a small billy club in my pants and after I backed heeled his knee I was able to break the grip and then knocked the shit out of the second one's head that was trying to grab me. They then ran to the car parked at the curb.

Get this. There were bystanders on the street but no one came to offer assistance. Don't expect help from the locals....most do not want to get involved.

It's sad that CR has so much crime. When I traveled there in the 70's - 80's I could walk anywhere alone in the gulch at midnight to 2am and never have a problem. Be careful out there. Walk with friends and keep an eye out.
