I am taking the plunge and saying here for 4 nights. This is somewhere around my 130th visit in 27 years of visiting (mostly business but always pleasurable).
Guy has always been a great host. No doubt he will make this a great destination as well. It will evolve and he will see to it that everyone is treated well. It is how he is wired.
I was around when the sportsman opened, the del Rey opened, when the only place to hang was key largo and then the green door. Every great place starts with an opening . I have no doubts that this will be a winner. I will even enjoy the solitude until this place gets some traction.
If you are around, catch me there from feb. 14-18. I will buy the first round.
Cheers

When you have time, tell us about when they the Del Rey opened?

When the Del Ray opened there were Happy Days, Old NY Bar, Bikini Bar, Belladonna and Park Hotel just to name a few places.

I liked Tiny’s the first sports bar in Costa Rica, Ave 2, owned and operated by NFL retiree Frank Phelps, now a Chinese restaurant, he died a few years ago.

Travalot, still curious to hear when the DelRey opened?

Del Rey was restored in 1994. A National Heritage Treasure. Imagine that.

Since we are talking about the Mona Lisa, who remembers it's first name? Not Clarion Amon.

Sure - before it was a hotel, it was an apartment building - during the "revolution" of 1948 (or there abouts) there was fighting that impacted the place - in fact, there are bullet holes to this day - I think they are to the left of the lobby bar, across from the travel/tour area and reception desk. The constitution resulting after that "revolution" banned the armed forces, consistant to today.

In the mid '90's, when I started coming down, all the "action" was at the Key Largo, did not shift to the HDR until a few years later :)

Belladonna was next to the Costa Rica Inn. Just north of the HDR. Both are now the Sleep Inn parking lot.

As i recall, HDR was not even a factor until the mid 90s and it was much more civilized. tica secretaries mostly and fruday and saurday late afternoon were the times to be there when the secterues stopped by for drinks. Very little english was spoken

Okay, another brain buster. In the 80s, where did most gringos stay (other than the Carierri), Owned by as I remember, a Swiss couple, who would not allow girls on premises, even if she was your secretary, which was often the case.

Two part brain buster. Where did we stay (worth 5 points) and where did we take the girls we pulled out of key largo.
