Pirate cab is $15, go across the street itno garage, elevator down to ground level, that's where the pirates drop off their customers, make sure you have $15 deal so there's no bull shit at the hotel.

A good alternative. A small correction. Arrivals are on the ground level. You have to enter the parking garage and take the elevator or escalator up to the the departure area to find the red cabs dropping off fares and then returning to San Jose.

I agree with Rac. I would not take the bus after dark. I would also be cautious during the day because I arrive carrying all my cash, camera, laptop, phone, credit card and ofcourse my passport. Best to get to the hotel as quickly as possible and store away those goodies. Cab or Shuttle bus is the safest way.

Agreed. I'm coming in at night on this trip(around 9:30). I can't fool around with these buses or Tico hook-ups. I'm coming from the west coast so I'm gonna be tired, hungry and horny(thank you, United )with a fistful of Chica cash in my pockets. Not to mention a carry on and a suitcase with all my electronic and clothing gear. Might be more amenable if it was daylight but at night, I'm in no mood for monkey business.

Yep, I stand corrected, got my ups and downs mixed up.

Good price but only includes 1 carry on and one checked in luggage, additional $10 for extra bag.

Never had a single question about the luggage deal, DGD and I travel with the same gear every trip: One old school Samsonite at 68.9lbs; one soft carry on with a 30lb weight; and one laptop shoulder bag. Never been an issue or a charge.

That's good news, but I was just quoting from their website. I bring two Samsonite's (both free on TACA), one carry on, and one computer bag, so I am not sure what they would do.

The pirate thing works pretty well for me. Only had 1 problem when the pirate said $15 was not the deal, which it was, no question, when he dropped me off at Sleep Inn. He bitched but I told him in the best spanish I could: "usted acordo $15" and I left. His pirate status probbly didn't give him much leverage about raising a stink, but who needs the discordant aggravation in pura vida land.

So make double sure you seal the deal

For some reason it seems that the reliable driver $20 drop off is always available but the pickup seems to be $25 to $30. Not sure why, this happens to me all the time.

Could be because cab driver has to park and come to arrival lounge to receive you.

In general when one takes the official orange cab at airport, does anyone register taxi number etc for safety and are you supposed to set a rate before getting into the cab or let the meter run its course?

I always take the Tuasa tico bus from the street in front of the airport to their terminal on Ave 2, between C12 and C14 for about $1 each way. The ride takes about 20 minutes, depending on traffic, and the bus comes about every 15 minutes during the day. A taxi from the bus terminal to the gulch is about $2. I usually walk for the exercise.

The money that I save by doing that goes to the girls.

I just did my first trip to SJ. Took the Tuasa bus to terminal, than took a cab to hotel. It cost me a total of 2k colones for the trip. On the way out, did the reverse. I'm a newbie and it was very easy to do. Thanks Rac for the info.

I was in SJ for 7 days... just got home today    . I had one of the best times of my life.....already planning my next trip. :D :D :D

cheers,
Attila
