I simply don't get this fascination with the presidente? I have stayed there (9 months ago), dunn inn, castillo, and others. When i go to the gulch for mongering, i don't stay at the presidente. Not when there are so many good choices. And certainly not when there are so many uncertainties around company and hoops to jump. For what????

Years ago the HDR and Presidente were the two big San Jose monger hotels; you stayed at the Del Rey if you wanted the "one stop shopping" cocoon, or you stayed at the Prez if you wanted a much nicer "legit" hotel that was CRT-friendly but far more discreet than a place like the HDR (which had a known reputation of being a whorehouse). A third option was the Amon Plaza, via the CRT discount done through Nixon. Sportsmen's was smaller back then, it was more like a private CRT clubhouse, and the Castillo was a ladi-back place for laid-back people "in the know". The other places that today are CRT hangouts weren't like that years ago.

The loss of the Prez was a major blow to CRT mongers (as well as the Amon Plaza). It is a big, full-service hotel that hasn't been fully replaced it. Bill would have to add a 100-room tower and a true restaurant to the SL to provide what the Prez did.

Personally I hope he does one day. I love that place! :)

I know on my first trip down to Costa Rica, I ran into 3 guys coming to sjo airport from Chicago Ohare Airport on my flights and in passing conversation, we discussed where we were staying.

They mentioned that they were staying at the Prrsidente. Since they implied they were in town for fun, and had confirmed reservations there, I passed along the warnings I had read about by fellow crt brothers and that if they had a lady with them, thete probably would be a chance she wouldn't be allowed up to the rooms.

I did mention the SL as my hotel and recommended it and lost sight of them once we got to SJO. I did bump into them that night while doing Pop's tour at the HDR and later at the SL. I forget if they said this was their 1st or 2nd trip, but saw them checking out the lineup at the SL a few times.

At least I tried warning them, but it was their nickel and they had to live with their choice, not me. And I had a great time

I've had great times at the Prez and will miss the News Cafe. Maybe I'll stay there in the future if I go to CR with a significant other. However, I plan to make my next trip to the Sleep Inn, pay the chica fee or go to the MP's and move on. Sportmans is great, but I would rather walk home at night, and Sportsmans is just a little out of the way. I've been drinking, so I hope this makes sense.

The Presidente starting going downhill back in 2006 IMHO. That was the start of the very subjective dresscode and the slide of quality at News Cafe. I started staying elsewhere and have not looked back since. As has been noted here it used to be great and very welcoming, but I got hint when they did not want our business anymore. I wish them well and am grateful they pushed me to find the other alternatives that are serving me well. I'm not planning on going back.

The Presidente was always a good hotel. Monger friendly at the time and still a little class and not a dump like the Del Rey. Good food and a nice place to hang around.

This has been a very informative post. I first started researching Costa Rica in 2009, and finally came there in early 2010. I almost booked the Pesidente, as I was not a member of CRT. It was not until after my 2nd journey there, that I joined CRT. That trip is burned into my mind,...lol...as many of you here will know,...

Now, soon to make my 7th journey, I would like to stay at Presidente for historical reasons only,...but would not stay there for consecutive nights,...same as the Holiday Inn.

Now that they are monger unfriendly, I really don't know what their client base is. It is too expensive for most of the birders and eco birkenstalkers, maybe they rely on visiting businessmen who don't have a clue about the gulch...yet. It seems like a business plan bent for disaster with their non-chica policy. I guess we'll see.

There was a recent Fodor's Guide on the shelf at my local library so I picked it up and thumbed through it. I noticed they listed the Presidente but not any of the other well-known monger hotels that frequently get mentioned here--i.e. no HDR, no SL, no HLH, etc. So whatever demographic they're going after, it sure ain't the likes of us.

Jesus Christ, Rob - how many ways to say it

Yeah, in my copy of the ad they said exactly what you wrote, and made many references to the entire staff smoking the good stuff - which I think you might frequently do, especially right before posting......

I know this topic has been hit several times but perhaps an update would help. I have read ' no more girls allowed in' on the net and heard from others you can still take them in. I went right to the source and asked the hotel outright, their reply is below. From the reply it seems ' yes', you can bring one in but at the same time reading between the lines it seems they have an out as they can simply say ' sorry, she doesn't meet our standards.' I wanted to share the below in case anyone else was pondering the issue.

In order to better serve you, it is important that we direct your attention to some of our policies regarding outside visitors (non-guests) and our “Hotel guest-staff code of ethics and conduct”, as I feel that depending on your needs, we may not be your best option for accommodations.

We have highly observed policies regarding noise, outside visitors, dress code and other issues that may affect other Hotel guests, a situation that we very much wish to avoid.

These policies include:

Absolute prohibition for minors to enter the Guestroom areas without their parents (prove may be requested), regardless of their gender. By Costa Rican law, a minor is a person under the age of 18.

Only one outside visitor (non-guest) per guestroom is allowed at a time, regardless of age, gender, religion, race or profession. Every visitor must have a valid, official picture ID and must be registered in our database every time they enter the Guestroom area. We reserve the right of admission and service and maintain historic records and databases of individuals and patrons who have behaved in a way that have made them non-welcomed in our premises.

Soliciting of any kind is prohibited in Hotel, Casino and Restaurant areas.

We request that all visitors and guests, regardless of age, gender, religion, race or profession, be dressed tastefully and appropriately. We understand that this is a subjective issue, and hence must inform our guests that the final decision will be made by our On-duty Manager. As a rule of thumb we request that our guests and visitors wear shoes, shirts and bottoms at all time while in public areas, avoid miniskirts or short shorts, clothing with racist or otherwise insulting motives and overly revealing tops. The use of coats is permitted in order to cover more inappropriate or revealing garments, but must be used at all time while entering, exiting or staying in the Hotel public areas.

I replied with:

Thank you, I assume that if you return in the evening with one female guest she is allowed to visit as long as she is an adult, dressed appropriately, in good standing with the hotel and registers with the front desk upon arrival? I would like to stay there again if that is in fact the policy, I just wanted to make sure that guests were not prohibited.

And they replied with:

You are very welocme.

You are correct.

Anyone have any more information or know if what they wrote is smoke and mirrors to just get a booking or if they truly do allow one guest? My guess ( uneducated as I am not seasoned down there in years) is they do allow one guest but want to discourage groups of partying mongers from staying there.

Thanks in advance to all, I posted in roll calls if any of you guys are around the end of October.

I don't know I'd take the chance if it's up the on duty manager's "subjective" impression. Then what do you do? Take her to a short time dump? I was never that impressed with that place anyway back in the day, maybe it's alot nicer now.

Amen - they have the option to change their policies, just not lie/mislead the public about it, which they have been since the beginning of the year when the policy changed.

With the economy being what it is, it will be interesting to see if they stick to it - but this was in the works for YEARS, so I don't see a change on the horizon.
