Spirit Airlines Pilots Strike After Failure of Contract Talks

By Mary Schlangenstein

June 12 (Bloomberg) -- Pilots walked off the job at closely held Spirit Airlines Inc. early today after failing to reach a contract agreement in more than three years of negotiations.

Spirit worked until 5:00 a.m. this morning to try to reach an agreement with the union, the airline said in a Business Wire statement today.

“We are frustrated and disappointed that our pilots have turned down an over 30 percent increase at a cost of over $70 million over five years while disrupting thousands of our customers and jeopardizing the livelihoods of our over 2,000 employees,” Spirit Airlines President and CEO Ben Baldanza said in the statement.

Spirit began pre-canceling some flights on June 11 and advised customers of alternative travel options. The strike is the first at a U.S. passenger airline operating on a regular schedule since 2005, when mechanics walked off the job at Northwest Airlines Corp. Spirit’s pilots said they are seeking pay on par with low-fare competitors JetBlue Airways Corp., AirTran Holdings Inc. and Southwest Airlines Co.

“Spirit pilots are willing to withdraw their services to get the contract they deserve,” John Prater, president of the Air Line Pilots Association unit at Spirit, said in a statement today. The union represents 450 Spirit pilots.

Spirit operates about 150 flights a day to 40 cities mainly in the eastern U.S., Caribbean and Mexico. The airline and pilots union negotiated daily in the week leading up to the walkout, including discussions yesterday.

Booking Attempts

Attempts to book flights for June 12 or June 13 on Spirit’s website yesterday generated a message saying that no seats were available and that passengers should select another travel date.

Airline spokeswoman Misty Pinson declined to say yesterday whether Spirit arranged for some passengers to travel on JetBlue or AirTran.

Spirit, owned by private equity firms Indigo Partners LLC and Oaktree Capital Management LLC, said in April that it would become the first U.S. carrier to charge for carry-on luggage that doesn’t fit beneath a seat. The fee, which takes effect for travel starting in August, is as much as $45, with lower rates for members of Spirit’s discount fare club.

Most major U.S. carriers charge at least $20 to check one bag and $30 for a second, and permit one carry-on bag and one personal item for free.

LMAO !!!   Irish Drifter - I think PR is actually eating a little crow on this one!!!

I've never flown Spirit, simply because I never got a good "feeling" about that airline. Based on everything I had heard and read, I never wanted to take a chance with them. It seems like something like this was almost inevitable. I hope they can resolve their issues, but even so, personally I'd only use them in the future as a VERY-LAST-RESORT-AIRLINE for my travel plans. Good luck for anyone holding Spirit tickets now...

So I got a call from Spirit at 6:10p to let me know that my 8:59 flight was canceled. I told him I knew and I was at JFK waiting for the Delta flight that would take me back to FLL which I paid $172 for one way. He offered me a 65 dollar refund on my missed flight and a 100 credit for future travel. do the math

No deep knowledge here but I believe the Pilots walked as much about working conditions as pay and benefits. Of course them turning down a 30% pay raise indicates gross under pay as well. JMHO...

This strike makes me angry. Taxpayers kept the airline industry going more than once. There should be a better process of negotiation that doesn't leave these passengers stranded. I hope they go under.

BTW: This doesn't affect me directly as I have a Delta direct flight to ATL that has been never been canceled or diverted in 40 plus trips. Knock on wood.
