Excellent review Traveling, pretty much sums up the Morazan and certainly mirrors my limited experience with the smoky-azz place, especially the MINUSES. Good to know that fat greasy tool Ricky Ricardo is still working hard with his hand out. I'll never forget checking in there, he carried my laptop bag and my room was completely trashed with a used condom laying on the carpet in the middle of the floor. Ricky Ricardo just steps over it and puts his hand out for a tip, I'm like WTF!? he says "Oh the maid will be here soon" and leaves. No other rooms available so I was stuck there, of course the windows do not open. Being a nonsmoker that sucked so first thing I did was go to Mas x Menos and buy a can of lysol and sprayed the whole thing in that stinky-azz jizz stained room with its worn out mattresss. An amigo had a jr. suite and said it was no better. I'm no snob and have stayed in some low-rent places over the years but phuck that dump :x life's too short especially while on vacation. Stuck it out for a night or two but was glad to eventually cut my stay short and go pay double for a clean, stench-free room elsewhere.

Stayed at the Morazon sporadically and more times then I care to admit on an as needed basis ... to the point where it is forever known between me and whomever I talk about it with as the "SMOKEY AZZ MORAZON". I just can not detach "smokey" from it.

THE PLUSSES:

1. Location, Location, Location - No Taxi or armed guards needed...very short post up to nighttime activity at ground zero

2. Pricing was always in the $42 range with tax included (Before they incrementally went up the last few years)

3. Bar - Bar on 2nd floor (used to be in the lobby) which gives you local pricing ... Brought something like 8 beers, 1 long island ice tea, 1 rum & coke and a non-alcoholic drink when I was doing a little social entertaining and I believe I got out of there for about $30 ... All I know it was much cheaper then buying drinks at the DR or KL

4. Over the years the "girls" at the front desk have been plenty friendly and helpful

THE MINUSES:

1. The Big Fat Ricky Ricardo looking dude who maybe the boss (Jefe) there. I understand there in the business to make money, but this guy is one of the most annoying if not thee most annoying figure in San Jose in my 6 years of travel there.

He always has his hand out. will always try to find a way to escort you to your room for a tip when you check in. He has offered to take my "laptop bag" upstairs for me so I can tip him. When I had no luggage he wanted to escort me upstairs with just the remote control to show me how to use it :? WTF .... On one trip when I told him I didn't need his services and I would take the remote control up myself ... he rolled his eyes ... kinda slapped the remote in my hand and walked away. He gets annoyed when you refuse to use his $25 cabs outside to go to the airport ... I could go on and on ... If it werent for the price and the location I would never go there based on him alone.

2. SMOKEY!!!! Thats why I call it the "SMOKEY AZZ MORAZAN" ... Your room either smells like an ashtray or asstray lol ; or it smells like air freshner trying to cover up the smokey smell. If you don't like smoke, dont even think about doing anything in the casino.

3. Be careful...not that there are many glorious views...but be careful that you dont get a room facing into a brick wall giving you that dungeon feel

4. I never had a problem with security, but I was always curious to the cleaning crew leaving multiple doors open on a floor as they clean and they are no where to be found. Not exactly what I want to see coming back up to my room and the door being wide open and nobody around but it has happened on more then one occasion.

IN SUMMARY:

I can see someone staying there based on location (everything at arms length) and price (budget) and if the smokeyness doesn't get to you. I have done it when I needed a room for 1 or 2 nights top and knew I would be out of the room most of the time and of course save for the 1 to 2 hour shuttles in and out. When and if I need a place for more then a day or 2 I look to other venues with more friendly, spacious and aromatic confines just in case I want to just chill or relax or do a little more entertaining then just on the bed.

The Ricky Ricardo guy is annoying...I dont know who/what is worse ... him or the onslaught of taxi schiesters you see when you exit baggage claim at the airport

Paco, Is there no end to this fat bastards extended hand reign of terror? LOL!!! The guy is a very annoying sideshow (Thank goodness he doesn't deter from the real purpose of coming to Costa Rica and staying in the Gulch) ... You almost don't even want to speak back to the fat bastard when he says hello to you for fear it will cost you something or show up on your bill.

That is a classic account of Ricky Ricardo. The used condom in the middle of the floor ... well thats just precious...and the fact that he still had his hand out ... well I personally wouldnt expect anything less from except for him to carry my shyt right back down stairs and out the door.

What would have been the classic response was to pick up the condom with a dollar bill and put both in his hand and tell him "thanks for cumming to my lovely room with me".

Freakin guy has no shame SMH

I guess the fact that the "SMOKEY AZZ MORAZON" is the only "hotel/casino" within a 2-3 block radius of ground zero (Del Rey / Key Largo) that has no chica fee and has/had dirt cheap prices (and it is only a half a block away) tells you just how freakin smokey and questionable (YMMV) this place has to be ....

Oh Lord please don't let me win the Lottery and buy this place so I can totally refurb it and run that POS Ricky outta town. I want to stay humble.

I guess in the whole scheme of things .... if it were a better hotel with its proximity to the Del Rey and Avenida Central ... it wouldn't be dirt (no pun intended) cheap relatively speaking with no chica fee. i.e. Sleep Inn, Holiday Inn, Balmoral, Presidente, etc.

But hell, if someone could just buy it, make the necessary renovations which in all honesty shouldn't be anything major and of course fumigate the damn place, add some ventilation and windows ... then this could still be a place for the locals to mingle / gamble and for budget / short stay travelers.

But before any of that can occur ... "Thee" Fat Bastard has got to go. No offense to other Fat Bastards around the globe, but he is the creme de la creme of his kind.

My remote for the TV did not work so I went to the front desk and "Rickey" was the person I had to ask cause there was no one else there. It took him 5 minutes and he finally reached in a shoe box full of remotes and handed me one. Took it back to the room and of course it didn't work. Without a propina he simply will not help However there is a chica named Angie she works 2 to 10 and she is a sweetheart

I have stayed at the Morazon a few times recently and have enjoyed it very much . $52 per night includes tax and breakfast...By the way, Ricky Ricardo is just a bell boy, not any kind of manager. I find him amusing.

I've stayed there many times over the years, about six times the past year or so. Perfect location, but it does have its minuses. I'll second the comments regarding Ricardo. Indeed, he's a pain in the ass. One time a few months ago, he got Buzzfla and myself a taxi to go from the hotel to the Dunn Inn, around 7:00 at night. (We should have walked there anyway). The taxi driver tried to charge us $6.00, when it should have been about $1.50 maximum. I think we gave him two dollars and got out of the taxi.
Also, the junior suites have mini-fridges, but they don't even work! Why have them there in the first place if they are not functioning?! Ridiculous. The smoke is indeed horrendous. Lastly, the street noise is terrible, the whole night.
One plus is the sports book on the second floor. Minimum bet is $30, maximim $3,000 (I believe).

LOL!!!! All the things you mentioned are so true ... I also have stayed at the Morozan more times then I care to admit even though I curse it so.

You just can't beat the location and the no chica fee...the fact that is is cheaper helps.

The rooms are smokey/musty whatever you want to call it and if you are offended by cigarette smoke, smell, mildew then you will hate it. I'm not a smoker and don't spend much time in the room except to do my business so I can tolerate it for a day or two tops.

I will admit the staff, especially the girls, have been extremely friendly and helpful over the years... It's only that Tool Ricky Ricardo who is a pain in the azz that overshadows how pleasant they are ... as you said... the Dunn Inn is a dollar cab ride tops and they tried to hit you for $6 SMH ... He's just a shameless fat bastard.

I remember playing the sportsbook and winning a bet for maybe $80 and I remember going to collect and the guy literally going into his pockets damn near turning them inside out like bunny ears to get me my payoff ...LOL

Maybe because I got there when it first opened, but it really didn't give me the warm fuzzies if I were to had one lets say $5000 .. LOL

I assume it was early morning and it was such a small winnings that I wasnt worthy of opening the vault for ... LOL

I also assume that because it is still going strong and I haven't heard any complaints about people collecting that it is all good.

Ha Ha love all the Ricky Ricardo stuff!
For all you that don't like the Morazan....GOOD! Stay out of there! I love it, and on my last trip i tried the Sportsman Lodge for a couple of days (this was after being in the Morazan), and was right back in the Morazan as fast i could be! Sportsman's is more for the traveling gringo, not me man. I do like you traveling gringo's though, don't get me wrong.
Ricky Ricardo can sing and dance believe it or not. I seen him at Castro's one night tearing up the dance floor and then in a little while he was upstairs singing some mean Ricky Martin!
By the way, anyone got a good email for morazan? That's besides the costaricanmorazan@hotmail.com and info@costaricanmorazan.com?
i've emailed 'em both and no response.
thanks
Luis
