For a long time from its start, air travel was a thing for the rich, and the early years of the jet age had a particularly glamourous image (people dressed up to travel by jet), so the airlines had F/As to fit that image. Don't know when their union had the requirements chnages, but it most likely coincided with the cheapening of air travel and the airlines becoming more and more like cattle haulers.

It's nice to the the Asian airlines keeping uo the traditional glamour image. :D

People dressed well in the early days of air transportation even before the introduction of jet powered aircraft. They also dressed in suit, tie and fedora hats at major league baseball games.

In those days a stewardess was a very sought after job and the competition and selection process was brutal. Rules were strict and rigorously enforced. Height and weight proportional, wearing a girdle mandatory, hygiene beyond reproach, etc, etc, etc. Mandatory grounding at the old age of 27  When you boarded a flight it was not a question if any of the stewardesses were pretty it was which of all the beauties is the standout.

Why did they do it? They got to travel to places their family and friends could only dream about. Remember a very small percentage of people had ever actually flown and those girls who worked for carriers with international routes went to places others dreamed about but knew they would never get there. Then off course they also had the dream, which in many cases came true, to bag a rich passenger or airline captain as a marriage partner.

Those were the days my friend, those were the days.

As an add-on to Brother HikerTom's post--At the beginning, stewardesses had to be RN's, at least on PanAm. Oh, and the unions may have had input, but it was the Feds that overturned the height/ weight (and marriage and family, and gender) restrictions as not being relevant to the needs of the job. OTOH, Jackie Brown (Pam Grier) can attend me any time she wants to.

Hottie is a hottie for any race, but Asians are not my 1st pick (gotta give the nod to the chicas on that one). But on a recent business trip overseas, I fell in love about 10 times during my 14 hour China airlines flight.

So far, in all my years of traveling, China airlines so far has the best looking flight attendants in my book.

My up-coming trip down will be on my 1st ever TACA flight, curious to see the talent level on that one.

Have I got a story about an F/A when I was younger!
Most, if not all became F/As to hook a rich pilot. In the early years,
Intercontinental flights required RNs, the old prop driven planes.
Some still do, but with recent salary cuts the local LEO or FireFighter make more money.
Flaco

I would rather have an old fattie with years of experience and training than a young hottie when and or if the sh*t hits the fan.

Hi Calistyle,
When are you going to CR on TACA? I am going end of Aug. (got a flight from LAX to SJO for $280!). Never used TACA before, let me know, how it was? Thanks

Duessel69x2-

I'm going June 11th-15th. It's my first non-business trip to CR. I usually have to book through Delta or AA, but since I'm on my own on this one, TACA was the lowest I could find...scored the same deal as you, $280 RT, on the way, layover in El Sal, direct on the way back.

Sorry for the temp hijack on the thread fellas.

Well at least you didn't get the gays mens crew like I got on AA coming back from MDE a couple weeks ago.

Actually they weren't that flamboyant and did a great job (hand and blow), just kidding. They were professional and courteous.

Thing I'm noticing and may be because of the economy is that here in America where workers still have some rights the attendannts with seniority remain and the young pretties have to go home. Now in Latin just the opposite. Yep book only on latin airlines if you want to see the hot young pretties. :)

As a SPIRIT frequent flyer...I concur wholeheartedly with Lolligagher... :( Spirit "flight attendants" appear to be just a rung or two up the ladder from the Walmart check-out personnel... Some of the fugliest creatures I have ever seen on a plane! :( But...oh well... you get what you pay for
