IMO, SL serves decent food. The quality control is good and the meals are consistent. Some of the menu items are very good. I like the chicken taquitos and surprisingly, the spaghetti bolognese is delicious (even though the accompanying garlic bread leaves a lot to be desired), as it reminds me of how my non Italian mom used to make it. Both the tico and american breakfast are good and the SL cooks know how to prepare over easy eggs. Many CRT members have their own favorite menu items.

Usually the service is very good, although if the bar is overly busy, you can get lost in the crowd. The wait staff is very pleasant, except I have never gotten used to the morning waitress's (the negra gordita whose name escapes me) brusque demeanor.

As an aside, I must take issue with 911Driver and his ironic assessment of SL overall. Although I agree wholeheartedly with his sentiment, and would like to guarantee myself a room there, unfortunately the cat is out of the bag. In fact, one of the reasons I like the place so much is because so many of us choose to convene there. All things being equal, there is no place I would rather stay.

I don't think I'll mind that. I like peace and quiet at breakfast, so if she doesn't want to chat, that's a plus for me.

Is Hazel the one you are thinking of CC? I think that is her name... Black chica with red hair? She is as sweet as the rest, she just does not speak much English. Very nice once tou get to know her. Asta is a find! The best!

I thnk the Bartender/waitress you are referring to is Heidi, I have always been treated very well by her as well as all the staff at SL..

And yes, Asta is the best

Heidi! I never can get her name to stick because is see a "Heidi" as a Swiss Miss type and she mos' def' does not fit that mold.

Yeah, Heidi's the one. I've seen her be nice to others, I must admit. Could be my personal hygiene.

It's not you.. I have seen her be quite the B*tch at tmes, she may be nice to me because I brought her an inexpensive Nokia unlocked phone a few trips back as a gift..

I love the food and the drinks there. The menu is extensive and the atmosphere is congenial.

Now I did have one issue on my last visit there. They have quite a menu of cocktails available, and I tried to order one (can't remember what it was, but it seemed fairly straightforward) but the lady didn't speak much English and couldn't make it. I had pointed the drink out on the menu, which named out the ingredients, which were either universal words like vodka or the brand names of the individual drinks. I gave in and got a screwdriver or something and enjoyed that. I only had that problem once - and I don't remember the lady who did that - but I thought it was interesting that I couldn't order a drink that was on their menu.

On a somewhat related note, my wingmen and I enjoyed taking our ladies to eat at the SL as well. They seemed to enjoy the food and the atmosphere as well. The ladies we had were all pulled out of DR, and I didn't notice any evil looks from the independents working the SL. Although granted I was focused on the ladies at hand and there always seemed to be a 3-1 ratio of men to women there while we stayed..

It seems that more and more women are finding out about the SL. They just don't stay long. For the most part, unless they are the SL ladies, they are there for about 1/2 hour, if there is no business for them, and then hit it back to HDR/BM or wherever.
