This may be a dumb question, but I am known to ask them from time to time. Is there a way to get an award ticket for a later date and then fly standby around the time you want to go? Go ahead..flame away.

It must depend on where you are flying to San Jose FROM. I just got back to Phoenix from San Jose, where I booked my airfare 2 weeks before the flight and flew first class round trip paying only with frequent flier miles & $26 in fees. I was even able to upgrade my traveling companion to first class on the day of the flight down with my miles (he had paid cash for his coach seat) but first class was full on the way back, so he flew coach on the return. I just checked www.usairways.com for availabilty around christmas and there are even some frequent flier seats available, but at premium rates. It looks like it depends on where you are flying to San Jose FROM.
