Taking a big camera system might also get you mugged. If you've already got a small digital, can we skip the cell phone pix?

Duh? Ya think? Actually, I had it on the first trip when Tom and I did the eco-trip, but the rest of the time it was in the safe.

You tell me: are the pix from trip #2 (i.e., Angel), good enough?

We should be able to get a BOB group together this fall or winter. By then, the bartenders at the BM may know my drink as soon as I sit down. Gods bless Continental.com. :D

Everything you want to know about digital cameras.
There are reviews from different websites and prices.
On the left-hand side you can sort by name, size, price, etc.

Another good site I came across today:
http://tech.yahoo.com/rc/digital-cameras/103

Cool web sites. I have an old 2MP about the size of a pack of cigs, that I hope will make Ramair4 happy. I have to make the pix smaller to post anyway, so 2MP is hardly a limitation. It's just a damn battery hog.

The pic of "Angel" was ok, but looked a little like it had been blown up and cropped. However if you're still using a 2 megapixel camera its time for an upgrade anyway. Nothing elaborate, something compact, 5 mp or greater, decent flash, either USB or wireless download (No dock required), that accepts memory cards and get some Ni-Cad batteries.

You might want to broach the subject pretty soon then, passports take time.

Batts are Lithium-Hydrids, uses an SD card, and I transfer files by a card reader. It was only $75. Looked at the link to the current cameras, and most are too big for true pocket action. Take your pix, and we can have a shoot-off!

I haven't posted here much, but for the CRT guys I've done four CR trips so far, the last two (May and July) had overlap with Cyrano. Have been beating the CR drum over on the other board that we inhabit, and slowly have been making converts. :D

Hey, Tom, welcome to VIP status!

Life is an adventure, and right now, CR has a lot going for it - not the least of which is cheap elite qualification miles, and inexpensive ticas. Goodbye LAS, hello SJO!

And I am REALLY getting to like the Prez. They even reserved the specific room I asked for! Just like the lofts in Old Montreal, except less than half the price.

The Ticas might have had something to do with it too.

I can't be the only one. The rest must still be trying to read all the info on this board.

Thanks, JFF...er Cyrano. ;)

Well, Montreal had been pretty much his exclusive destination, and he wasn't expecting much when he decided to go to CR with me (separately) in May. Now he's about to do his 3rd trip in four months! :D

No, actually I think LPIN is based on a lot of xenophobes. Even Vern does not have a passport. Regardless of the opportunity, a lot of them will never come to CR. Tom is a hiker by avocation, and my job requires that I be a road warrior. CR is easy if you travel well. Most of those guys are too afraid.

Currently I don't have a passport either (will in a few weeks), but that doesn't mean I have a problem with foreigners. LPIN had the advantage of being legal and within driving distance. Thanks to you and Tom, I'm now aware of a more exotic, and economical alternative. I'm sure others will take the hint as well.

Yeah, I have to go with Ramair on this. Since LPIN is the only legal option in the US, it is the easiest way to go for most, even if it is ridiculously expensive now. Those guys bite the bullet and pay up since they don't know of anything better. Hell, I never knew about CR--or even Canada for that matter--when I made my first LPIN visit in 2004. I am now a convert and bit by bit we are making more. Cyrano does have a point too in that some guys will cling to the LPIN security blanket even if they do know about better places outside the US.

Duh, LPIN=Legal Prostitution In Nevada. Maybe I'm ignorant but it took me a while to figure out that acronym as it is one that is new to me and perhaps to others on this board. I think LPIN is a real rip. I'd sooner break the law and go with the hookers here in Florida. They're also a rip but not nearly as bad. The only other thing I'll say on this subject is that I hope your "converts" don't bring their ridiculous pricing standards with them when they come to CR just because they think they're getting a "deal" compared to prices back home.

Re: Digital Cameras, I'm with cyrano. Fancy cameras are nice but they can also be thief magnets and if they're stolen can be an expensive bullet to bite (like fancy watches). I think one should only bring such things that are sufficient to do the job when travelling to a place where they might be stolen. And feeling compelled to leave an expensive camera locked away back at the room all the time kinda defeats a lot of the purpose of bringing one along to begin with unless all you want to do is take shots of chicas you bring back to your room. One doesn't have to go as low as the lousy cellphone cameras but a cheap 2MP camera will do the trick for most purposes such as web posting and delivers picture quality that is sufficient for all but Bub Guccione wannabes. Good battery life is important but you're probably going to want to bring rechargeable batteries anyway. IMHO, the other most important characteristic other than cost is that it be small enough to fit relatively inconspicuously into your pocket. Unfortunately, the small size usually comes with a price so it will be something of a tradeoff. Anyway, those are my thoughts, YMMV.

Same with me in '03.

An otherwise intelligent poster, smoothpate is the poster Ch*ld for that. He has rationalized satisfaction with paying $3,000 for 3 hours...

The big camera worked fine on the eco trip, but has no place in the DR. Ramair4 is just looking for further visual justification for getting that passport.
