Tico buses are ok IMO. Just excercise the same precaution as you would in any crowded area. Pick pockets at bus stations/on bus are rampant, it's a fact. Both locals and tourists are prone to those if not careful.
I have taken the Tricopa buses to southern CR a number of times this year. Tickets are about 5000 C per perosn one way. You can buy tickets a day before. Buses were clean, no AC though.
The only thing I dislike is the drivers do streets pick ups ( other than predestinated stops ) and allow stand up passengers. But for the price, I can live with that. The veiws during the bus trip are excellent btw. Schedules bus stops all have clean WC and cafeteria. During some leg of the trip, local venders are allowed onto the bus to sell drinks, food, fruits, pipas, leather wear, whatever they want to hawk. Just so you know.
There were pick pockets on the buses during my last 2 trips, vicitms were ticas. So watch your stuff guys. It happens to anyone.
