Is it just me or are air tickets rediculously expensive right now? In about 6 months the prices of tickets have doubled from Boston. I know it's the high season, so a lot of people are probably just paying the price. Me personally, I'm going to wait until the fares go down. But, I'm wondering if the sudden increase in fares has cut down visitors to CR and if it will have an affect on the increasing popularity of tourism in the country?

Gustar similar point made in this thread- https://costaricaticas.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9753

The CR high season appears to be wide open with flights and hotels full in spite of the higher fares.
I think most people that can afford to travel to Central America can certainly afford the extra 200 bucks for airfare. Superbowl weekend and Spring-break coming, unlikely things will slow down at all until Semana Santa and the green season. (IMHO)

I expect airfares to be high for March through middle of April because of Spring breaks and Easter. That was the case last year and it is going to get worse.Tourism is growing rapidly as evindenced by full flights, at least that has been the case my last few trips.I am using my airmiles to go to outher places to hobby that are good deals now til fares come down.I hope we see some relief for late April and May before summer hits as fares are likely to be high all summer.rbc100

I can think of a few ways to spend $200 rather than to give it away to the airlines. I want to book for late May but I am waiting until Taca has another sale. $606 is just not gonna cut it.

It's not always best to book early, I booked for SB weekend in November for $453. I could have gotten it on Mon or Tue of this past week for $386. :x

If you dont spend it your K*ds will. As a monthly visitor I see fares up and down and it all averages out. Cheeper in San Jose than anywhere in the USA.

I seem to find the best airfare bargains about 6 to 8 weeks out. That just seems to be when they discount them when traffic is slow.Problem these days is traffic is slow less and less. I occasionally catch a bargain earlier and sometimes at the last minute. I am not sure on all airlines but know on American if you book a fair early and a lower price comes up for your sceduled trip they will give you the new price if you call.I have gotten credits several times that way. I think it was last trip started out at $525 and after two credits was only $350.rbc100

I know that I am not pleased that the fares are up $100 dollars since I checked two weeks ago, before I went on a Texas vacation, or $200 from my Nov/Dec or Sept trip, but I noticed on another thread that someone mentioned that they would just as soon stay home and monger in the US. Now your area might be different than mine, but locally, the going price is $200/300-not outrageous--but how far will the local activity go before the $100 increase in airlines fee is offset by doing business locally, especially with hoes with an attitude. Although I sure don't like paying more than I have in 6 years for airfare, I'm trying to keep this in perspective, and accept the cost associated with my shortcomings as a whoreticulturalist.
Sometimes, it sure ain't easy to be sleazy!

I suspect there is still some fall-out from the Cancun disaster (i.e. tourists seeking alternative warm climate destinations). Hopefully rates will improve once we get into the rainy season and beyond.

Question:

I can get a flight in July for a roundtrip, starting in Denver, switch in NC and then on to SJO

The price seems acceptable at about $450 total, but the layover in NC is like 13 or 14 hours?!?!?!?!?!?!

Is there a better way I don't know? Is it worth it to simply pay more to avoid that? As if 7-8 hours on an airplane arent bad enough, 13 hours in an airport??? I can if I must, but can I get some input on alternatives???

thanks to all

Only you can decide how much additional airfare is worth avoiding a 13 or 14 hour layover.

My personal choice would be unless the extra cost is exorbitant I would pay it. What kind of condition are you going to be in after that long a trip? How is it going to effect your first day or two in San Jose?

Again, only you can answer that.

While this statement might be true, for me it's all mental. I was used to paying just over $300 from Chicago. Now I can't find anything under $550 for a half decent flight schedule. Last time down I actually had to resort to flying out of MDW and returning to ORD. This sucked but it was worth it due to the price of airfare. Right now I can go to the Dominican for what it used to cost for SJO.

Well, I can spend $300 more and have a shorter layover... I gain a few more hours in SJO but I lose $300... or, lose the extra hours but have more cash to spend... I figure to be there a week, so time isn't a real killer ...

what would YOU do?
