I stayed at the Dunn Inn for four nights in late October 2015. Had a great experience with the hotel and enjoyed my stay.

The staff was very attentive and helpful both before and during my stay. They answered every question I had before my trip, and were very responsive in their email replies. They are also an English-speaking staff, which was of course very helpful to me. Besides being helpful in answering questions about their rooms, they also helped me set up a rainforest tour (which I did go on during my stay).

One thing that should be noted: I wanted a deluxe room for my stay, which I believed would be a bit bigger in size. But, they apparently vary what they call a “deluxe” room depending on demand.

For this Halloween weekend, of course there was a lot of demand. I have stayed in some of their standard rooms before, and there’s not a whole lot of elbow room. I think I stayed in what was essentially a standard room, for the deluxe price.

I was in room 22. It was nice but a bit cramped. I would recommend 19, or 24-25, or rooms in the upper 20s. I think they go up to 29, maybe, and these are the larger rooms/suites. (A friend showed me room 19, it was nice.)

My room was on the order of $80 per night. But a nice room in San Jose is going to be about that price (or more), in my experience. Plus, I think all hotels in San Jose (and elsewhere) are going to vary their rates based on demand. So, to a large extent, it is what it is.

But, there were many positives to my stay. Before making my reservation, I emphasized to the front desk my strong desire for a quiet room. They accommodated this request fully, and room 22 is on the second floor, facing the inner courtyard (which actually has a roof on it) and away from the street. I slept just fine (with earplugs) in this room. The room also had a nice (if small) desk and chair where you could do some work, if needed.

The restaurant that is associated with the hotel, Alma de Amón, was a bit of a disappointment. This is the place that used to be Rick’s Café. I think there has been a change in management. I should point out that the hotel and the restaurant are apparently two separate business entities, not related except for the fact that they are tied to each other (practically in the same building).

The restaurant used to have big screen TVs showing sports – alas, no more. It seems to be trying to cater to upscale locals now with a more “elegant” atmosphere. But the menu options seem to have declined, and the service is sadly lacking. Nobody that works there seemed to be too much interested in taking my order. One lady (the hostess seemingly) was much more intent on lighting numerous candles than helping me secure a table or taking my order. On another occasion, on Halloween evening, me and a friend tried to see if we could have dinner there. We were asked if we had reservations. Ummmmm, Ok. We just walked back out. I got the distinct impression that this restaurant wants to cater to upscale locals, not gringo tourists.

I should note here that I believe that the complimentary breakfast that is served by the Dunn Inn in the Tropix bar area is also staffed by restaurant personnel. This was my impression. I am not sure about this, but I think this is the case. Breakfast is served in the Tropix bar area, which is a small, covered courtyard area, not in the restaurant per se. These servers, in stark contrast, were very friendly and efficient and helpful. I am not sure what makes the difference. They did seem to be different people than the ones who worked the restaurant proper, later in the day/evening. The complimentary breakfast is pretty good (pretty much a continental breakfast), and you can add bacon or eggs very for just a few bucks.

Again, it is my understanding that the hotel and the restaurant are separate business entities. So this is not a criticism of the Dunn Inn. I go on about this because those who wish to stay at the Dunn Inn will inevitably want to inquire at the restaurant about lunch or dinner. My advice – Don’t waste your time.

Instead, if you are hungry, just go across the street to the Italian Restaurante IL Gattopardo (great pizza) at the Mona Lisa hotel (soon to be re-named Taormina). This is a very nice restaurant, no waiting, no reservations needed, very good food at reasonable prices, and efficient and attentive servers.

Back to the Dunn Inn. I have enjoyed my time there every time I have stayed there, and would gladly stay there again. It is a nice and quiet hotel, with friendly and efficient staff.

But, the next time I go, I will look to try and stay in one of the larger rooms, even if the cost is a little higher.

So, I highly recommend Dunn Inn as a place to stay in San Jose. But in the evening, I would look for someplace else para la cena.

Pura Vida! :D

In the interest of fairness, here is a reply I received from the general manager:

"The room that you had is a deluxe. I just want to assure you we don't change our room's categories depending on demand. It will not be ethical and we do really care about our clients which is one of the reasons we have repetitive clients.

I apologize if our staff didn't explain the room you were staying at. The bigger rooms you mentioned in your comments are our suites.

The restaurant is a separate company since February but they still serve the breakfast we used to provide to our clients. The reason you noticed a difference in service AM/PM is because the lady that serves breakfast used to work for the hotel. They hired her since February. Your comments about service and menu options were shared with the new management of Alma.

Thank you again for giving your feed back.

Merry Christmas."

I too stayed at the Dunn at the end of October in room 18. It was a little small but the shower and water were always hot and the A/C was excellent. I think room 19 is a very nice room. I like the Dunn Inn a lot.
You are right on about the staff and the girl who serves breakfast - Xaviar is her name - is just a lovely person.
The Alma is trying to be very upscale but I do not know if they are succeeding. Their empanadas are excellent and they serve wine from Argentina I think. They tend to annoy many gringo customers and the lighting is so dim that you cannot read the menu or your check. Rather stupid. The bar tenders and staff I found are pretty friendly though and i think it the management attitude that annoys customers .
I also know that they do not want you taking your "dates" there so it is best to go to the Italian place across the street. Very pleasant atmosphere there and great variety of food.

Alma does suck. It was better off as Rick's. I'm surprised on the price. I had the best room in the house for $53.00 plus tax.

FWIW, I think it can be a lot cheaper to book through Kayak or Hotels.com or some such. There are reports on here about guys doing that and saving a lot of money.

I have to admit, I am not sure of the deal here -- how/why this works. When I mentioned to DI a price I was seeing on a 3rd-party/booking website, they did not respond to it. Maybe it's not in a hotel's interest to try and meet a 3rd-party/booking website price.

Me, I'm nervous about dealing with anybody but the hotel. ie, did you really get a reservation? But guys seem to use these sites successfully, for DI and perhaps other hotels.

In summary, it may be worth trying. The difference between $53 and $80 is pretty significant, IMO.

What I have found is that Hotels.com had the DI rooms for $57 plus tax during the low season.
In the high season I saw $77.
I called the hotel direct and since they had my name in the computer as a previous guest they gave me 10% off for CRT membership and another 10% for being a repeat guest. Also I stayed for 12 days around Haloween . I paid $57 per day for deluxe room 18.
Best to call them and talk to Ian Fernandez and also discuss which room you want.
Works very well for me.

The DI front desk told me directly to my face ---- that I'd get a better price at the DI by going through a 3rd party, internet reservation site.

I booked Dunn Inn for January at $57/night for deluxe thru hotels.com. (But you have to change the default option from 2 people to 1 person. Otherwise, it will be an extra $7/night. That's probably for the extra breakfast)

If you stay there a lot, go to the office and talk to the lady in charge of the place for your next stay. She will give you a better rate. Otherwise, I do hear a lot about Hotels.com for cheaper rates. If I'm not mistaken they have a good cancellation/refund policy also. Send an email to the hotel for airport pickup. Excellent service in that area. Also, eat elsewhere.

I too like Hotels.com.
Right now till March they show Deluxe room at Dunn inn at $57/day but in April it shows $88/day.
At that time especially if you are a returning guest you should talk to the lady manager or Ian.
The Dunn Inn web site seems to always show the rate at $78/day for the Standard room.
I always pick up the phone and talk my way in. Especially since I stay at least 7 days. Do not just let your fingers do the talking :D :D :D

I think The DI website is the last place to book a room. Do some homework and save a few buck to spend on beer. Call directly and talk to Marcela or Ian. The both speak great English.

I have always enjoyed staying at the Dunn Inn. They have always been fair with me. Hotels like that get to know you personally. :D They take care of me very well any time I call them.

Exactly.... I booked for the $57 a night on Hotels.com for a regular room and when my reservation ended I talked to Marcella and she gave me a great deal on room 28 (The Executive room upstairs at the end of the hall) for not much more than what I was paying on Hotels.com for a small room.

Can't say enough about the staff and the way they conduct their business at The Dunn. Really great operations.... It's just a shame the restaurant sucks now.
