That's the subject of 100's of posts. Don't know if the search function is functional again. Try that first, 'rental car" or "Avis, Budget, Hertz" etc and see what you come up with because a 100 guys have posted long detailed informative do's and don'ts on the issue and you can read for an hour and be very well informed.

If not, PM me and I'll help you. I always rent a car once I am leaving SJ but not while in SJ. Cheap (do it on line and make sure you check the boxes you are USA or CAN ), especially cheaper Sept -Nov. Insurance is always the major "what do I do"? Easy to get to the beach from downtown. Alot to know however, a lot of bad experiences, but a car provides alot of flexibility.

Depends on where you are going/itinerary. You going to Jaco and just staying there? Bad idea. It's small town, you can walk for the most part unless you are lazy like me. You going N to Guanacaste beaches or S to Quepos, great idea, especially if you can't sit still and want to move around a couple times a day--cabs will kill your budget--much bigger areas to cover so you'd spend $20 a day easy on cabs if you were like me who want to go downtown and then back to the beach and then to the condo and then back downtown. Or in guanacaste beaches, alot of them are way off the beaten path, so it's either stay at the hotel or cough up for a cab both ways to get to some action.

If you're staying at Amistad after October 18th and you want to go to Jaco, just jump on their daily bus:

No cheaper way than taking the public buses. About .30 cents from the Spanish park to Coca Cola and about $5 from the Coca Cola terminal to Jaco. Many people do it, even me a couple of times. However, I do tend to have motion sickness and those buses make me very queezy going the long way through the mountain roads.

Yes, there is something in between a public bus (where you can be pickpocketed/robbed on the bus or at the station) and a private driver/taxi. You can take interbus which costs $35 each way per person.
FYI-You need to book at least 3 days in advance.

http://www.shuttlebus.co.cr/website/sho ... /index.php

Renting a car to go to the beach for 1-2 days makes no financial sense. Depending on the class, you will pay $30-60/day for the car, plus another $12-20 for insurance daily. Then there's the gas (@ $5/gal). And the stress of having to make sure nobody breaks a window or scratches it or whatever. Take IB and get there in a nice A/C micro-bus. Safe, comfortable, and pretty efficient.

Bus did not hit the boat in September but assured it will be on the boat in October and should be fully operational by first week in December. We will be offering free transport to Jaco for All inclusive guests Starting on November 1st. Call us toll free for reservations 1 877 260 3027.

Sorry for the delay - but this is Costa Rica

Matt

Ha... What a coincidence! Friday, November 1st is the day that my wingman and I (along with a couple "chaperones") were hoping to go to Jaco for the day to catch some rays and have a few drinks.

Thanks Matt. Sounds good. See ya soon!

Mucho Gusto

Hey what a coincidence! We are staying at La Amistad and leaving on October 30th from La Amistad to Jaco, but will miss out on the deal...($70 savings from Interbus/Grayline rates). We also missed the discount through the 27th at La Amistad. Seems like the 28th through 30th are no man's land days. Any extension of transport offer Matt? :)
