This is probably best addressed in another post but--What's the purpose of changing money when most venues and probably the Chicas will accept USD at a reasonable rate? I can see exchanging $100 or so for incidental expenses but otherwise--why? Especially if you know what the real rate should be? Bit long in the tooth for this newbie question, aren't I?

I agree, like I said I exchange a hundo every 2 days or so for an occasional taxi or if I go out and eat somewhere etc.. I'm with you, I don't get it; but then again, my give a shit factor is pretty low on this too..

You guy know where to go to do both; many, especially new guys - even those w/ a few trips often don't.
I just like the idea of having the stamp bought (one time the line was really long at the airport - this was before you could buy the exit visa in SJ.
Re changing money, I normally pay for many things in dollars, and exchange $200 - 300 at the airport bank.
I have found that sometimes I'm limited in what I can exchange at a hotel, and I hate the idea of waiting on line at a bank in SJ and carring money back to the room.
Different strokes; no real "right or wrong" answer, especially for those who know CR - but since the question comes up quite a bit, I just think - especially for those new to CR - its easier just to have it done and over with
